19-7, 7.0 GU
Although the Saguaros suffered a rare loss on Thursday, all three Rangers prospects who appeared in the game turned in strong showings.
Cleanup hitter Mike Olt (.324/.391/.649) hit is Fall League-leading seventh home run in just 74 official at-bats. Olt, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, was 2-for-3 with that homer and a base on balls.
Righty reliever Ryan Kelly (6.52 ERA/.243 BAA) tossed a scoreless eighth inning, throwing 16 pitches (nine strikes) and working around one walk. According to pitch f/x, Kelly featured a 91-95 mph fastball, an 85-88 mph cutter, and an 80-82 mph curveball. He recorded one swing and miss––on an 87 mph cutter.
Johan Yan (5.00 ERA/.265 BAA) followed with a scoreless ninth inning on 11 pitches. The frame began with a single and a hit-by pitch, but he got out of it with a lineout to second and a double play off the bat of Mike Trout.
Pitch f/x shows that Yan threw sinking fastballs with all 11 pitches, ranging between 87-90 mph on the radar gun. When Yan became a sidearmer in extended spring training 2010, his velocity was mostly 84-86 mph, and he was more in the 86-88 range this year. However, as the year has progressed, he has reached 87-90 more often.
Joe Ortiz (1.35 ERA/.167 BAA) allowed a single in an otherwise clean inning of work against Lara on Thursday. The southpaw has pitched well in 12 appearances––6.2 ip, 4 h, 1 r, 0 bb, 5 k.
Navegantes del Magallanes righty Tanner Scheppers recorded the final two outs––getting a groundout and a flyout––in his club's loss to Margarita. While Scheppers has allowed only one earned run in 6.1 innings, he has walked nine and struck out eight.
The Dominican Winter League was off on Thursday.
No Rangers appeared in Thursday's games.
Richard Alvarez saw his first Liga Paralela action of the season for Caracas. The 19-year-old worked 1.1 scorless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Alvarez had a rough season in the States, posting a 7.79 ERA in 13 appearances at short-season Spokane. He logged 34.2 innings and gave up 47 hits, walked 15, and struck out 36.
Begins November 4.
