Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/5

Third baseman Mike Olt reached base twice in the Arizona Fall League's Rising Stars Game on Saturday while Dominican righty Carlos Pimentel continued to roll in relief. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Rising Stars West 11 – Rising Stars East 2

The West Valley side captured the 2011 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game on the strength of 10 runs in the game's first three innings. The West knocked out East starter Gerrit Cole in the first inning, tagging him for five runs in two-thirds of a frame.

Third baseman Mike Olt was the only Rangers' prospect to appear in the contest. The league's home run and RBI leader went 1-for-3 with a walk, a strikeout, and a run batted in. His single was an opposite-field broken bat shot that drove home a run.

Venezuelan Winter League

No Rangers appeared in Saturday's games.

Dominican Winter League

Escogido leadoff man and left fielder Julio Borbon went hitless in three at-bats––groundout to the pitcher, flyout to center, groundout to first base––before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.

Borbon, who is returning from ankle surgery, is now 6-for-29 (.207) in his first 10 winterball games this season.

Carlos Pimentel (0.82 ERA/.032 BAA) turned in yet another excellent performance out of the Leones' bullpen, as he struck out the side in a scoreless inning. Pimentel worked around one walk.

In his first 11 winterball innings, the 21-year-old has surrendered only one hit while walking five and striking out 15. He has also fanned the side in each of his last two appearances.

Although Pimentel's velocity and overall stuff took a step forward during the 2011 regular season, some scouts felt he often focused on the velocity more than ‘pitching.' The result was a high walk rate and middling overall results. Still, the righty is young and has decent stuff.

Mexican Pacific League

Obregon sent Saturday's contest against Guasave into extra innings by plating five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. After righty Cody Eppley (3.86 ERA/.269 BAA) worked a scoreless top of the 10th, the Yaquis walked off with the win in the bottom of the frame.

Eppley hurled a clean 1-2-3 inning on only 11 pitches, getting two strikeouts and a flyout. He now has 17 punchouts in 14 innings this season.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Ponce catcher Kevin Torres got his first winterball action of the season on Saturday, entering as a pinch runner in the eighth inning. He didn't have a plate appearance.

Torres, 21, has been in the Rangers' system since the summer of '08 and has spent practically all four seasons in the short-season leagues. He posted career best numbers in the rookie-level Arizona League this past summer, hitting .345/.433/.500 in 51 contests.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

There were no games on Saturday.
