Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/14

Right fielder Joey Butler fell just a home run short of the cycle in his Venezuelan winterball debut on Monday night. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Saguaros third baseman Mike Olt (.347/.425/.800) was 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a hit-by pitch before being lifted from Monday afternoon's game.

Olt now has seven round-trippers in his last seven games and 13 (plus 40 RBI) in 24 contests. He is averaging a home run per every 7.3 official at-bats in the hitter-friendly circuit.

The slugger now has six more home runs than second-best Robbie Grossman (seven) and seven more RBI than second-best Nolan Arenado (33).

True to his scouting report, the 23-year-old is flashing staggering power to go with a good walk rate (12 walks in 24 games) and quite a few strikeouts (31). While Olt has legitimate bat speed, the strikeout totals will be worth monitoring as he presumably tackles the Double-A level in 2012.

Second baseman Leury Garcia, who batted ninth, was hitless in three at-bats. The 20-year-old switch-hitter is 26-for-76 (.342) with nine extra-base hits in the AFL.

Venezuelan Winter League

After playing in a handful of Liga Paralela games, right fielder Joey Butler made his first appearance for the ‘big' Navegantes del Magallanes club on Monday. He contributed to the 6-4 victory by falling a home run short of the cycle––Butler was 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple, and three runs batted in. He also struck out once.

The 25-year-old Butler is coming off a career year in which he hit .322/.388/.493 in 113 games at Triple-A Round Rock.

The only game scheduled in the Dominican Republic––Toros vs. Estrellas––was postponed.
