Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/18

Right-hander Wilfredo Boscan worked six shutout innings for the second consecutive start in Venezuela on Friday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise – OFF
26-10, 9.5 GU

The Saguaros enjoyed a day off prior to Saturday's Arizona Fall League Championship Game. The contest, which will be televised live on MLB Network, will be played at Scottsdale Stadium at 2:00 p.m. Central. Surprise will face East Valley Division champion Salt River.

Venezuelan Winter League

Right-handers Wilfredo Boscan and Yusmeiro Petit faced off in a game that remained scoreless until Zuila walked off with a win in the bottom of the 10th inning. Boscan (1.97 ERA/.252 BAA) began the game with six shutout frames for Zuila, scattering four singles and striking out three without issuing a walk.

Through eight appearances and six starts, Boscan has been one of the top starting pitchers in Venezuela. He has yielded only seven earned runs in 32 innings, walking six and fanning 19.

La Guaira lefty specialist Joe Ortiz (5.00 ERA/.235 BAA) retired both batters he faced in the eighth inning, getting a strikeout and a flyout.

Joey Butler was 0-for-3 with a strikeout for Magallanes on Friday.

In other Magallanes news, Rangers Director of International Operations Mike Daly told Venezuelan reporter Manuel Lira that left-hander Martin Perez will not pitch in winterball this season. It's not a particularly surprising decision given that Perez struggled late in the season and logged 137.1 innings during the regular season––by far a career high.

Dominican Winter League

Escogido's Julio Borbon came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 10th inning, and he grounded out in his lone plate appearance.

Multiple reports out of the Dominican Republic suggest that the Leones del Escogido have signed Rangers centerfielder Craig Gentry to play for the winter.

Mexican Pacific League

Obregon closer Cody Eppley (3.15 ERA/.229 BAA) struck out the side in his inning, but he also surrendered a solo home run to Caneros DH Emmanuel Avila. The sidearmer now has 25 strikeouts in 20 innings this winter.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Sidearming lefty Alexander Claudio got the start for Ponce on Friday and hurled three scoreless innings, working around three hits and two walks. He also struck out a pair.

The 19-year-old Puerto Rico native has a total of four shutout frames in his two appearances thus far.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

No Rangers appeared in Friday's games.
