Left-hander Miguel de los Santos began his Dominican Winter League campaign by tossing five scoreless innings on Tuesday evening. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

La Guaira left-hander Joe Ortiz had a rare rough appearance, as he surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. The southpaw specialist coughed up a fifth-inning grand slam to pinch-hitter Oswaldo Navarro.

Guilder Rodriguez played right field as a late-inning defensive replacement for Lara. He didn't have a plate appearance.

Reliever Tyler Tufts appeared in his second game with the Etrellas de Oriente of the Dominican Republic on Tuesday evening. In his debut, on November 26, the right-hander retired both hitters he faced.

On Tuesday, the 24-year-old allowed one single in an otherwise clean frame. Featuring a fastball that sits between 92-95 mph, Tufts is coming off a strong season at Double-A Frisco in which he posted a 3.23 ERA and walked only seven batters in 55.2 innings.

Cibao shortstop Leury Garcia made his winterball debut by popping out to second as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. The speedy Garcia recently played in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .361/.379/.590 in 20 contests.

Also making his winterball debut on Tuesday was centerfielder Craig Gentry, who batted leadoff for Escogido against Garcia's Cibao club. Gentry had two singles and a hit-by pitch in five plate appearances. He was also caught stealing.

Engel Beltre popped out to shortstop as an eighth-inning pinch hitter for Licey, dropping his batting average to .265.

Two Rangers prospects also helped the Toros del Este shut out Beltre's Licey team. Lefty Miguel de los Santos, coming off a strong AFL performance, made his first start of the winterball year with five shutout frames. He scattered three singles and fanned six without issuing a walk.

Reliever Fabio Castillo extended the shutout through seven innings with two frames of scoreless ball. He gave up a hit and struck out one.

Castillo, 22, has permitted only three hits in 8.1 scoreless innings for the Toros so far this winter.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared on Tuesday.

Puerto Rican Winter League
