Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/6

On Monday afternoon, Rangers prospect Arlett Mavare faced off against former Rangers starting pitcher Ryan Glynn in Venezuela. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at the winterball action from the last two days in the Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

In the only game played on Monday evening, Caracas catcher Yorvit Torrealba went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a run batted in.

Second baseman Yangervis Solarte appeared as a pinch hitter for Aragua on Tuesday and went 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice bunt, and two runs batted in. The switch-hitter is now 15-for-48 (.313) with four doubles and a triple in 16 winterball games this season.

The Rangers signed the 24-year-old Solarte to a minor league deal last week. He played the '11 regular season with Minnesota's Double-A affiliate, where he posted a .329/.367/.466 slash line in 121 games.

Lefty reliever Joe Ortiz faced only one batter on Tuesday, and that hitter reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. The run eventually scored and was unearned.

As usual, Lara's Guilder Rodriguez got into the game as a pinch runner but didn't get a plate appearance.

Magallanes right fielder Joey Butler saw his average dip to .246 after he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Dominican Winter League

Toros left-hander Miguel de los Santos' second Dominican start of the season wasn't quite as smooth as the first, when he tossed five shutout innings. On Tuesday, de los Santos yielded three runs––two earned––in 2.1 innings, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out one.

Fabio Castillo suffered the loss in relief of de los Santos, as he gave up a pair of unearned runs in 1.2 innings. Castillo allowed two hits and fanned three. Despite the loss, he has yet to permit an earned run in 11 innings.

Estrellas de Oriente catcher Dusty Brown was pinch-hit for in the third inning before his first plate appearance of the game. There's no word as to why he left the game.

Julio Borbon took another step in the right direction by getting a triple and a walk in five plate appearances on Tuesday. His average still sits at just .148 on the winterball campaign.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Tuesday's games.

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Rangers appeared in Tuesday's games.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

In a rather strange matchup on Monday, La Guaira's Arlett Mavare faced off against Aragua starting pitcher Ryan Glynn. Yes, that's the same Ryan Glynn who started 35 games for the Rangers between '99 and '01.

The game ended up going to the bullpens, though both starters pitched well. Mavare worked five innings of two-hit ball, yielding just an unearned run. He walked two and struck out three. The 21-year-old has the following stat line in Liga Paralela: 24.1 ip, 10 h, 3 er (1.11 ERA), 10 bb, 21 k.

Caracas reliever Richard Alvarez allowed two runs in an inning on Tuesday. He gave up a hit, walked a batter, and hit one. He also recorded a strikeout.
