Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/10

Right-hander Fabio Castillo is pitching well in the Dominican Republic after a rocky regular season at Double-A Frisco in 2011. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at Saturday's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League


Caracas catcher Yorvit Torrealba was 0-for-3 on Saturday. Through his first nine winterball games, the 33-year-old veteran is just 6-for-31 (.194) without an extra-base hit plus one walk and four strikeouts.

Lefty reliever Joe Ortiz (4.91 ERA/.214 BAA) worked a perfect ninth inning for La Guaira, throwing 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes while inducing two groundouts and getting a strikeout.

Aragua leadoff hitter and shortstop Luis Hernandez singled once in two trips before leaving the game during the 10-1 defeat. Second baseman Yangervis Solarte, who moved up to third in the batting order, went 1-for-4 and struck out once.



Dominican Winter League


Engel Beltre got into the game for Licey in the sixth inning and went hitless in his two at-bats, dropping his winterball average to .259. Beltre was caught stealing for the third time this season.

Speedy prospect Leury Garcia saw action as a pinch runner in the eighth inning and stole second base, but he didn't score or get a plate appearance.

Estrellas de Oriente catcher Dusty Brown went hitless in three at-bats.

Righty reliever Fabio Castillo (0.00 ERA/.152 BAA in 12 innings) hurled a scoreless frame, working around a hit and a walk while inducing three groundouts. Through 10 appearances with the Toros, Castillo has yielded just two unearned runs in 12 innings.

No Rangers appeared in Saturday's games.
