Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/11

Left-hander Miguel de los Santos had another dominant outing in the Dominican Republic, yielding just one hit and striking out eight over four shutout innings. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of Sunday's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

Diminutive southpaw Joe Ortiz (4.41 ERA/.203 BAA) had one of his longer outings of the winterball season, working 1.2 perfect innings. The 21-year-old struck out one.

Ortiz, who projects as a situational lefty reliever due to his upper-80s, low-90s fastball and exceptional command of a plus slider, has limited fellow winterball left-handers to just 2-for-22 (.091) with no extra-base hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts.

Lara's Guilder Rodriguez came in as a pinch runner in the eighth inning and scored a run. As usual, he didn't get a plate appearance.

Yangervis Solarte (.313/.370/.403 in 21 games) continued his hot hitting with two singles and two RBI in four at-bats. The switch-hitting second baseman has six walks and four strikeouts on the season.

Margarita shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, who was signed by the Rangers earlier this week, raised his average to .261 with a perfect 4-for-4 performance that included two doubles and a walk. He was also caught stealing for the fourth time.

Playing in the big Caracas/Magallanes rivalry, Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba socked a solo home run in the second inning. It was not only Torrealba's only hit in four at-bats, but it was also the Leones' lone run in the 4-1 loss.

Dominican Winter League

Left-hander Miguel de los Santos came out of the bullpen on Sunday, working piggyback duty with Astros pitcher Aneury Rodriguez. Both hurlers helped combine on a 1-0 shutout victory for the Toros.

De los Santos was particularly strong, tossing four innings of one-hit, shutout ball while fanning eight and walking one. After topping the Arizona Fall League with 40 strikeouts in 30.1 innings earlier this offseason, he has 15 in his first 11.1 winterball frames.

Escogido left fielder Julio Borbon raised his average to .176 with two singles in four at-bats, and he also laid down a sacrifice bunt. Following a nine-game hitless streak in which his average took a nosedive, Borbon has now hit safely in his last four contests.

Overall this winterball campaign, the 25-year-old has played in 25 games, going 12-for-68 (.176/.269/.294) with a double, two triples, and a home run. He also has eight walks and 13 strikeouts.

Dusty Brown had a single and a walk in four plate appearances for the Estrellas de Oriente. He also committed his sixth passed ball behind the plate.

Licey centerfielder Engel Beltre was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, raising his winterball average to .262.
