Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/18

Tigres del Licey outfielder Engel Beltre has bumped his average to .297 after three consecutive strong games in the Dominican Republic. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of Sunday's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

Margarita shortstop Alberto Gonzalez (.256/.315/.390) moved to seventh in the batting order and responded with three singles in four trips. The 28-year-old infielder, who spent the entire 2011 season in the major leagues, had been hitless in his last three contests.

La Guaira infielder Renny Osuna entered the game as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and scored a run but didn't get a plate appearance. He also played at third base.

Guilder Rodriguez also saw action as a pinch runner and also didn't get an at-bat.

Second baseman Yangervis Solarte (.306/.352/.388) was hitless in three trips for Aragua and also committed his second error in 26 games this winter.

Dominican Winter League

Licey's Engel Beltre (.297/.350/.419) stayed hot by going 3-for-5 with a triple and a run batted in. The left-handed prospect hit leadoff and manned center field for the second consecutive game.

In 34 games this winter, Beltre is now 22-for-74 (.297) with four doubles, a triple, and a home run. He has drawn five walks and fanned 15 times.

Shortstop Andres James appeared as a late-inning defensive replacement at shortstop but didn't step to the plate.

Gigantes del Cibao speedster Leury Garcia picked up his first-ever winterball start on Sunday, batting leadoff and playing second base. The switch-hitting Garcia notched two singles in five trips.

Scuffling Estrellas catcher Dusty Brown went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a walk, and he also committed his seventh passed ball behind the plate. Through his first 12 games, the 29-year-old Brown is 5-for-29 (.172) with one home run.

The Leones del Escogido had a pair of Rangers manning the outfield on Sunday in centerfielder Craig Gentry and left fielder Julio Borbon. Gentry went 0-for-3 with a walk (striking out twice) while Borbon was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.

The club faced left-hander Miguel de los Santos, who came on in relief in the sixth inning and failed to retire any of the three hitters he faced. He gave up three runs after allowing two walks and a double.
