Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/23

Caracas catcher Yorvit Torrealba reached base twice on Friday but was ejected after striking an umpire in the head. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba went 1-for-3 with a hit-by pitch and a strikeout before being ejected from the game against the Caribes in the eighth inning. He was tossed after the strikeout for striking home plate umpire Dario Rivero in the head (click the link for video).

There will certainly be disciplinary action coming down from LVBP (Venezuelan Winter League) in the coming days or weeks, but at this time, there's no word as to whether it will affect him in state-side ball.

Aragua second baseman Luis Hernandez (1/3) and left fielder Yangervis Solarte (1/4) had one single apiece.

Dominican Winter League

There were no games on Friday.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Friday's games.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Kevin Torres, who has played only catcher and first base during his professional career thus far, entered as a defensive replacement at second base in the ninth inning. He didn't get a plate appearance.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

La Guaira took two-of-three games against Aragua to capture the 2011 Liga Paralela championship. Right-hander Arlett Mavare pitched in the first game for La Guaira, entering in relief and tossing four scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Following a good regular season with the rookie-level Arizona Rangers and short-season Spokane Indians, Mavare pitched extremely well in Venezuela this winter. He posted a 1.37 ERA in seven appearances. Over 26.1 innings, he yielded just 12 hits while walking 11 and striking out 23.

The 21-year-old hurler stands just 6-foot-0 and doesn't have overpowering velocity––sitting mostly between 88-90 mph––but he has excellent command and a mature curveball with a usable changeup.
