Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/26

The Venezuelan Winter League announced a 66-game suspension for Caracas catcher Yorvit Torrealba on Monday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

LVBP President Jose Grasso announced via his Twitter account on Monday morning that catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been suspended for 66 games after striking an umpire during an argument in a recent game. The ban covers the remainder of this winterball season and all of next year.

The suspension, of course, does not affect his ability to play for the Rangers.

In Monday's game action, La Guaira lefty reliever Joe Ortiz (4.76 ERA/.222 BAA) appeared in his first game since December 11 and yielded a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Even with his inconsistencies this winter, the 21-year-old hurler is limiting fellow southpaws to a .125 batting average.

Margarita shortstop Alberto Gonzalez (.257/.323/.394) went 2-for-4 with a triple, two walks, and a run batted in. The former Nationals utility man has six doubles, three triples, and four round-trippers in 44 games this season.

Dominican Winter League

There were no games on Monday.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Monday's games, but the Mexican Pacific League was the only Caribbean circuit to play games on Christmas day. Catcher Jose Felix appeared in both ends of Guasave's doubleheader. He popped out in his lone plate appearance during game one and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the nightcap.

Puerto Rican Winter League

There were no games on Monday.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

Aragua second baseman and left fielder Yangervis Solarte has played most of his winter in the Venezuelan big league, but he also appeared in three Liga Paralela games, going 5-for-13 with a double and a home run.

Right-hander Richard Alvarez made seven relief appearances for Caracas, yielding three runs in 7.1 innings and allowing eight hits while walking four and striking out six.

Like Solarte, La Guaira utility man Renny Osuna has played most of this season in the big leagues but also played in seven minor league games. He was 6-for-22 with two doubles, six walks, and three strikeouts.

Arlett Mavare was one of La Guaira's most effective pitchers, going 1-0 with a 1.37 ERA in seven appearances, including three starts. He logged 26.1 frames and allowed 12 hits while walking 11 and fanning 23.

Magallanes outfielder Joey Butler was 3-for-10 with a double in an early-season tuneup before joining the big club.

Young outfielder Eduard Pinto had three singles in 12 trips, playing the first three games of the Liga Paralela season before leaving to participate in the Rangers' Dominican instructional league.
