Rangers Winterball Roundup – 1/15

Jose Felix's Algodoneros de Guasave moved within one win of the Mexican Pacific League's championship series on Sunday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Venezuelan Winter League

Renny Osuna came on as a pinch runner in the seventh inning. The utility infielder, who remained in the game at the DH slot, grounded into a fielder's choice in his only at-bat.

Second baseman Yangervis Solarte helped Aragua to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory by going 1-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Leadoff man Luis Hernandez went 0-for-3 but walked and drove home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Dominican Winter League

Having already clinched a berth in the Dominican Winter League's championship series, Escogido continued playing out the remainder of its round robin playoff schedule on Sunday. Leadoff hitter and centerfielder Julio Borbon was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, dropping his postseason average to .224.

Cibao designated hitter Brad Nelson, who is batting .211 in the playoffs, singled once in five at-bats.

Licey's Engel Beltre got into the game as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and scored a run. Staying in the game in right field and grounded out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Mexican Pacific League

Catcher Jose Felix appeared as a late-inning defensive replacement for Guasave and laid down a sacrifice bunt in his only trip to the plate. With the victory, the Algodoneros took a 3-1 series lead in the best-of-seven semifinal against Culiacan.

Puerto Rican Winter League

The Ponce club was eliminated from the postseason on Thursday, meaning Mayaguez will face Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League final best-of-nine series. Only two Rangers appeared in Puerto Rico this winter––both for Ponce.

Catcher Kevin Torres, 21, played in seven games for the Leones, going 2-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts. Sidearming left-hander Alexander Claudio made three appearances––including one start––for Ponce and worked 5.2 scoreless innings, yielding five hits, walking four, and striking out four.
