Lone Star Dugout Video: Justin Grimm (4/22)
Through five starts at the Double-A level, Justin Grimm has hurled four quality efforts. His April 22 outing at Corpus Christi was by far his weakest. On that day, the University of Georgia product lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing five runs––four earned––on nine hits. He walked one and struck out only one.
Grimm simply didn't have his sharpest stuff in the Sunday afternoon start. His fastball––which has ranged between 90-95 mph this season––topped out at 93 in the game, though he did hit 93 with some frequency.
Although Grimm located his fastball well early in the game, neither of his secondary pitches were sharp and––as a result––he struggled to put hitters away despite getting ahead in the count with consistency. His 75-79 mph curveball was too often loopy, and he appeared to be slowing his mechanics when throwing the low-80s changeup.
The 23-year-old has the following stat-line in his other four starts this season––24.0 ip, 11 h, 1 r, 5 bb, 26 k. He has been able to locate his above-average fastball while missing bats with the breaking ball and pitching effectively with his rapidly improving changeup.
While Grimm's weakest outing of the season is highlighted in the video shown below, he's off to a solid overall start in 2012. The three-pitch mix––with improved fastball command––has some scouts believing that he's got a chance to stick in a starting role. They're still split, though, and that's a debate that could last throughout the season.
