2012 July 2 Prospect Video: Leury Vargas
Name: Leury Vargas
Position: First Base
Hometown: Haina, D.R.
Date of Birth: 8/30/1996 (15)
Trainer: Adolfo Frias
Event Scouted: Dominican Prospect League workout and scrimmage in Surprise, Ariz. (3/21/2012)
Although Vargas was the youngest player on this year's Dominican Prospect League travel squad––he's not eligible to sign until his 16th birthday on August 30––he's definitely the most physically developed.
That comes with its positives and negatives. Listed at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds (he appears even beyond that at present), Vargas is supremely strong for his age, but he will grow taller and bigger. He's already relegated to first base––something that's rare in 15-year-old Dominican prospects. Additionally, Vargas posted a 7.29 time in the 60-yard dash at the Perfect Game National Showcase on June 14 and projects to be a well below-average runner with a fringy arm.
Vargas will have to hit his way through pro ball, but his more than intriguing bat should give him an opportunity to do so.
At the DPL showcase in Arizona this past March, the lefty swinger (and righty thrower) flashed well above-average (bordering on plus-plus) raw power in batting practice. In addition to his fantastic pure strength, he showed strong wrists and a relatively short stroke during batting practice. Vargas didn't show quite the same approach during game action––though he did square up a ball to left-center field––but he's also very young and should ultimately be able to carry the BP success into game results. While he has elite raw power, he'll have to prove the hit tool is good enough to bring it out consistently in game action.
