Lone Star Dugout Video: Lewis Brinson (6/30)

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Through his first 16 professional games, 2012 Rangers first-round pick Lewis Brinson is leads the rookie Arizona League with 15 extra-base hits. Lone Star Dugout has scouting video of the prospect from the Rookie Rangers' games between June 27 and 30.

When the Texas Rangers selected outfielder Lewis Brinson with the 29th overall pick in this year's MLB Draft, the general word from scouts was that he was very raw but also possessed perhaps the highest ceiling of any position player in this year's class.

Surprise Rangers manager Corey Ragsdale agrees with that sentiment, according to what he's seen thus far.

"I'm right there with (those scouts)," Ragsdale said in a recent interview. "It's a lot of talent.

"He has been very exciting and he's going to be a very exciting player to watch as he learns to play the game. You can just tell that his ceiling is very, very high, and he's going to be a very good player."

The full transcript of the interview with Ragsdale, which includes much more in-depth talk of Brinson's game, can be found at this link. A full scouting report of Brinson and his Arizona League teammates will also be posted in the coming days.

Although Brinson is certainly a bit raw, he's put the pure talent on display while performing well in the early going. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound centerfielder, who turned 18 in May, has posted a .282/.346/.620 slash line through his first 16 professional games.

Brinson currently leads the rookie Arizona League with 15 extra-base hits––eight doubles, five triples, and two home runs––in those 16 contests. He's drawn seven walks but also leads the league with 24 strikeouts.

In the following video, Brinson's first at-bat (walk) comes against Padres prospect Zach Eflin, a 6-foot-4 righty who was the 33rd overall pick in this year's MLB Draft. He is also shown facing Oakland prospect Michael Ynoa (strikeout) in his first plate appearance against the AZL Athletics.

The at-bats in the video result in: walk, opposite-field double, flyout to left, strikeout looking, walk, groundout to third base.
