Salt River 8 at Surprise 3

Surprise could not hold an early lead as they were downed by visiting Salt River 8-3.

The Saguaros saw the River Rafters score three in the third to flip a 3-1 Salt River deficit into a 4-3 score, an advantage which they held the rest of the contest. The tallies came off starter Ben Henry (Texas) who did not record an out past the second inning in his second straight start. Henry (L, 0-1) yielded a run in the first then exited in the third after he loaded the bases via a double and two free passes with none out. Fellow Rangers farmhand Ben Rowen allowed all three runners to cross on a two-run single and a ground out.

Salt River added two more in the fifth off Royal Malcolm Culver on a two-run bomb. The Rafters' final two tallies came in the sixth against the Mets' Greg Peavey in the first of his two innings of work.

Colin Walsh, Surprise's starting right fielder, went hitless in two at bats with two base-on-balls. The number five batter opened the second by drawing his first walk, advancing to second when centerfielder Cesar Puello (NYM) was plunked. St. Louis' Cody Stanley jammed the sacks full when he reached on a force attempt, as Salt River's second baseman committed a throwing error. A double to right knocked in both Walsh and Puello while Stanley raced to third. Stanley touched home on a single up the middle that finished the Saguaros' scoring for the game.

Defensively, a throwing error by Walsh in the third on the two-run single given up by Rowen allowed a runner to advance to third and set up a score on a subsequent ground out. Walsh again walked to start the Surprise's half of the third and made it to third on a single with one out. However, the Saguaros squandered the scoring opportunity when the next batter hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Walsh struck out swinging and hit a come backer to the pitcher in his two official at-bats.

Although Stanley was Surprise's starting catcher, he came to the plate only once. After reaching and scoring in the bottom of the second, the Cardinals' fourth-round selection of the 2010 draft caught the top of the third. A pinch hitter replaced him when his spot in the order came up in the bottom of the frame. Stanley was charged with two passed balls.

(Brian Walton note: Stanley felt some tightness in his quad area and was removed from the game as a precaution. He was apparently fine by the end of the evening and is expected to be available Thursday.)

Thursday's game: at Salt River, 6:35 pm AZ time (7:35 pm CT), Justin Marks (4-0, 2.20)
