Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/6

Surprise Saguaros first baseman Chris McGuiness had a big game on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with a walk and a three-run homer. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 7 – (@) Mesa 0

Saguaros first baseman Chris McGuiness helped lead his club to a 7-0 victory over the league-worst 6-16 Mesa Solar Sox. McGuiness capped off a six-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning with his three-run homer.

Overall, McGuiness went 3-for-4 with that home run, a walk, and those three RBI. He's now batting .333 on the Fall League campaign.

Catcher Kellin Deglan, who batted eighth, whiffed twice in four hitless at-bats, dropping his batting average to .174.

Dominican Winter League

Cibao's Leury Garcia struck out while making an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance on Tuesday. After getting off to a fast start in winterball, the switch-hitting speedster is now just 2-for-27 over his last seven games.

Licey starting pitcher Chad Bell suffered the loss for his club, as he was knocked around for four runs––two earned––in one-plus innings. He yielded four hits, including two doubles and a home run.

Leadoff-hitting centerfielder Leonys Martin went 1-for-4 with a double and a base on balls. Nine-hole hitting left fielder Engel Beltre added a single and a walk in four plate appearances.

The highly aggressive Beltre has now drawn three walks in his last four contests. During the regular season at Double-A Frisco, he drew 26 walks––the second-highest total of his career––over 133 games.

Venezuelan Winter League

Tiburones de La Guaira reliever Joe Ortiz worked a perfect seventh inning, earning his third hold while throwing 11 of his 18 pitches for a strike. He got one strikeout, one groundout, and one flyout.

Ortiz has the following stat-line through 12 appearances––10.1 ip, 8 h, 4 er, 3 bb, 8 k.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

Although Caracas right-hander Richard Alvarez spent last week on the Leones' ‘big league' roster, he didn't appear in a game. The 20-year-old hurler returned to Liga Paralela on Tuesday, where he turned in a solid performance and earned his fourth victory without a loss.

Alvarez tossed 4.2 innings of one-hit ball, yielding one run while walking two and striking out six. He now has the following stat-line in five appearances (three starts)––22.1 ip, 14 h, 3 er, 2 bb, 17 k.

Middle infielders Edwin Garcia and Santiago Chirino both appeared as late-inning pinch hitters for Caracas. Garcia flew out to left field while Chirino was hit by a pitch.

Aragua leadoff hitter and centerfielder Teodoro Martinez filled up the box score by going 3-for-4 with a double, a sacrifice fly, two RBI, and a pair of stolen bases. The 20-year-old Venezuela native played his 2012 regular season at High-A Myrtle Beach, where he batted .271/.316/.364 with 12 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

The Caimanes' Diego Cedeno, also hitting leadoff and playing in center for his club, singled once in three at-bats.

DH Elio Castillo was 1-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk for the Magallanes team.

Mexican Pacific League

Joey Butler broke out of his slump with a double and two walks in five plate appearances. He bumped his batting average to .204.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 8.
