Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/10

Outfielder Hirotoshi Onaka is playing in the Australian Baseball League this offseason, and he capped off a strong opening weekend on Saturday – or Sunday in Australia. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 3 – Scottsdale 4
15-12-1, 1.5 GB

Playing a televised game on MLB Network, the Saguaros dropped a 4-3 decision to the Scorpions in Surprise.

Rangers prospects shortstop Luis Sardinas and first baseman Chris McGuiness both played a key role in their club's offensive attack.

Sardinas went 2-for-4 with his third double in 10 games. The 19-year-old switch-hitting prospect is now 14-for-42 (.333) with three doubles and a home run in the Fall League. He's drawn two walks, struck out eight times, and stolen one base in three tries.

McGuiness (.316/.407/.539) had a double and a sacrifice fly in four trips, driving home two of Surprise's three runs.

Submarining reliever Ben Rowen (3.75 ERA/.178 BAA) surrendered an unearned run in 1.1 hitless innings. He walked one and fanned two. Right-hander Ryan Rodebaugh (2.84 ERA/.222 BAA) worked around two singles in a blank top of the ninth, fanning one.

Since scuffling early in the AFL campaign, Rodebaugh has pitched well in his last six outings––8.0 ip, 5 h, 0 r, 1 bb, 7 k. On Saturday, he flashed an 88-92 mph fastball (topping out at 93) to go along with a low-70s curve and an 81-84 mph slider.

For the Gigantes, Leury Garcia got the start at second base and went 1-for-3 with an intentional free pass. Catcher Konrad Schmidt played the game's first seven innings and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout at the plate. Martin's stolen base came with Schmidt behind the plate.

Venezuelan Winter League

Cardenales de Lara utilityman Guilder Rodriguez entered as a late-inning defensive substitution in center field and singled in his only plate appearance.

The 29-year-old Rodriguez has played each of the last four regular seasons between the Rangers' Double- and Triple-A affiliates. He recently re-signed a minor league deal with Texas for the 2013 campaign.
