The Saguaros were held to just two hits by Phoenix in a pivotal game on Wednesday.
First baseman Chris McGuiness, who batted in the cleanup spot, singled once in four at-bats for half of his club's hits. Second baseman Luis Sardinas (0/2, 2 BB) went without a hit but walked twice, and catcher Kellin Deglan (0/3) fanned once in three hitless at-bats.
Deglan also committed his first passed ball of the Fall League campaign.
First baseman Mike Olt was the only of the Rangers prospects in the Licey lineup to collect a hit on Wednesday. He singled once in four at-bats. Centerfielder Leonys Martin (0/4) and right fielder Engel Beltre (0/3) both went hitless. Martin also committed his fifth error.
Top prospect Jurickson Profar appeared in the ninth inning as a pinch runner for Vladimir Guerrero, and he scored a run.
Although Zulia dropped Wednesday's game, starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan (0.65 ERA/.235 BAA) turned in yet another fantastic outing. The 23-year-old righty tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, scattering five hits while walking two, plunking one, and striking out four. He threw 57 of his 90 pitches for a strike.
Boscan has posted shutout ball in five of his six winterball starts this season. His overall stat-line is as follows––27.2 ip, 23 h, 2 er, 8 bb, 19 k.
Aragua leadoff man and centerfielder Teodoro Martinez singled twice in five at-bats, and he also stole a base.
Tiburones first baseman Jhonny Gomez was 2-for-4 with a double, continuing his strong Liga Paralela campaign.
For the Caimanes, centerfielder Diego Cedeno added a single of his own in four trips.
Although Eduard Pinto projects as more of a left fielder down the line, he manned center for the Navegantes on Wednesday. The young prospect whiffed once in four at-bats without a hit.
Magallanes reliever Randol Rojas worked around a hit and a walk while tossing a scoreless seventh inning.
DH Tomas Telis was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI for Caracas. He also stole a base. Infielders Edwin Garcia and Santiago Chirino appeared late in the contest. Garcia walked in his only plate appearance.
Jose Felix's Guasave club went against Joey Butler and Mazatlan on Wednesday. Felix, getting the start behind the plate, went hitless in four at-bats, striking out once. The cleanup-hitting Butler was 0-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt.
Five Rangers prospects appeared in the Leones de Ponce's 8-6 victory over Caguas.
Cleanup-hitting DH Mike Bianucci helped lead the Ponce offense by going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Catcher Jorge Alfaro singled once in four trips.
On the mound, young right-hander Anyelo Leclerc worked a worked a perfect eighth inning. Jon Edwards then came on to close it out but didn't retire a batter before yielding three runs.
Edwards plunked the first batter he faced before serving up back-to-back home runs. But righty Alex de la Cruz, who played the regular season with the DSL Rangers, finished the inning without allowing a run for his first save.
Appearing as a pinch hitter for Caguas in the top of the ninth, 2012 Rangers draft pick Janluis Castro was hit by a pitch (from Edwards) and scored a run.
As usual, the Australian Baseball League is taking the midweek off before returning to action on Friday.
