Dominican Winter League

Licey fired both its manager and pitching coach prior to Saturday's contest against Cibao. The Tigres currently sit at a league-worst 9-21 despite having a talented roster.

Playing in yet another Licey defeat on Saturday, leadoff hitter and centerfielder Leonys Martin (.256/.341/.410) had two singles and a walk in four plate appearances. He was also picked off of first base at one point, getting caught stealing for the fourth time in 11 attempts.

Right fielder Engel Beltre and shortstop Jurickson Profar entered in mid-game and both went hitless in two at-bats.

After getting out to a hot start and even leading the Dominican Winter League in hitting at one point, Beltre is now just 3-for-22 (.136) over his last 10 games.

Meanwhile, Cibao shortstop Leury Garcia (.290/.333/.430) helped contribute to his team's victory over Licey with two singles in five at-bats. He struck out twice.

Aguilas Cibaenas sidearming right-hander Johan Yan (3.00 ERA/.235 BAA) retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen, getting three groundouts and a strikeout.

The 24-year-old Yan now has the following stat-line in 12 relief appearances this winterball campaign––9.0 ip, 8 h, 3 r, 2 bb, 15 k. He's inducing 11 groundouts per airout.

Making his second start behind the plate in the Dominican Republic, Estrellas catcher Luis Martinez went 0-for-4 offensively but gunned down one of two attempted base stealers.

Venezuelan Winter League

Tiburones de La Guaira southpaw Joe Ortiz struck out the side, fanning all three batters he faced while working the seventh inning on Saturday. The 22-year-old Ortiz now has 15 strikeouts in 15 innings this winter, and fellow lefties are hitting just .071 against him.

Zulia catcher Juan Apodaca saw his batting average fall to .190 after he went 0-for-3 in his club's 3-1 loss to the Caribes.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

The following results are from Friday's games. Although Liga Paralela does not play games on the weekend, the box scores from Friday were not posted until Saturday afternoon.

Eduard Pinto, playing at DH, contributed to the Navegantes' 4-2 victory by going 2-for-3 with a run-scoring sacrifice fly.

The Tiburones posted 17 runs against Tampa Bay on Friday, and right fielder Jhonny Gomez (.389/.466/.549) scored four of them and knocked in another. He had two singles and two walks in five trips.

Caracas shortstop Edwin Garcia was 0-for-2 but also walked twice.

Aragua outfielder Teodoro Martinez went hitless in four at-bats and committed an error in the field.

Mexican Pacific League

Guasave catcher Jose Felix (.367/.360/.490) raised his batting average once again with two singles in five at-bats. Because the highly aggressive Felix has yet to walk and has hit a sacrifice fly, he has the rare distinction of having a higher batting average than on-base percentage for the time being. But he's also 18-for-49 with six doubles in 16 games.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Although the Leones de Ponce fell 5-4 on Saturday, catcher Jorge Alfaro came through with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Overall, the slugging prospect was 1-for-4 with a strikeout and those two RBI. He also committed a throwing error from behind the plate.

Cleanup hitter Mike Bianucci went 0-for-2 with a hit-by pitch, and he also reached base on a catcher's interference call. Playing a rare game in left field, Bianucci picked up an outfield assist by throwing out a runner at home plate.

Ponce lefty reliever Tim Murphy yielded one run in one inning. He walked a batter but didn't allow a hit.

Australian Baseball League

Brisbane split a doubleheader at Adelaide on Saturday, and leadoff hitter Hirotoshi Onaka went a combined 2-for-8 (both singles) with two walks and a strikeout.

The 24-year-old Onaka has now hit safely in eight of his first nine games in Australia. The outfielder is 11-for-34 (.324) with two doubles, seven walks, and nine strikeouts. He's also stolen three bases in four tries.
