Yankees Top 20 DSL Prospects

Here's a list of the top 20 prospects from the Yankees' Dominican Summer League and 2012 International free agent signings. Find out who should bust into the Top 50 in 2012 in a big way and find out who has a chance to become decent prospects down the road. We'll also highlight a few more names from the International side beyond those 20 in our subscribers-only message board!

1. C, Luis Torrens - Signed this year out of Venezuela for a reported $1.3 million as the Yankees' top International sign, the former infielder has begun his transition to catching and it has gone remarkably well in a short period of time. He shows above average arm strength already and the requisite agility behind the plate to become a good receiver and adept at blocking balls once he gets some reps under his belt. Offensively he has the look of a high-average hitter with good gap power now that could develop into average and possibly even above average home run power down the road. He's a J.R. Murphy type of player on both sides of the ball.

2. SS, Abiatal Avelino - The Dominican native signed a year ago and a strong argument could be made to put him atop the rankings here, especially after hitting .302 with 20 stolen bases and nearly as many walks as strikeouts in his debut season with DSL Yankees1. As polished a hitter as he is, however, defensively there are no holes in his game. He shows plus range, plus arm strength, and he's as sure-handed as he is intelligent in the field. He also has monstrous hands, the kind of extra-large hands that could be a precursor to some burgeoning power down the road. He's legit.

3. RHP, Dallas Martinez - There are pitchers with higher ceilings ranked below [and some not even ranked here at all] but few offer the safeness in projection than this Mexican native. Often compared to current GCL hurler Giovanny Gallegos because of his effortless motion, current above average stuff, and command, like Gallegos he has the type of frame that could fill out, get stronger, and develop into plus stuff down the road. He has an excellent combination of top-shelf ceiling and a very high floor at the same time.

4. RHP, Simon De La Rosa - Signed just a couple of months ago out of the Dominican Republic, there are some team officials who believe he has a ceiling akin to that of Rafael DePaula -- his stuff is that good. He already sits 92-95 mph with his fastball and it's a true plus pitch when he pitches consistently with a downhill plane. He also has a power breaking ball already. The changeup reportedly needs work though and so does his overall consistency, but he's a sky-high ceiling kind of hurler.

5. LHP, Omar Luis Rodriguez - A Cuban defector who signed for a reported $4 million this past summer, this southpaw is either too high on the list considering he hasn't even thrown a pitch in a Yankee uniform yet due to visa issues or he's not high enough given the reported high level of pitch-ability with three big league pitches, including a fastball that can top out at 93 mph. There's a wait and see approach with him right now until the visa issues get ironed out but team officials believe he could be a quick mover through the minor leagues.

6. RHP, Luis Severino - Statistically it was a very good debut season for the hard-throwing Dominican native. He went 4-2 with a 1.68 ERA and surrendered just 46 hits in 64 1/3 innings, thanks in large part to a fastball that will sit anywhere from 92-96 mph. His arm is electric and the slider, which can be wildly inconsistent at times, flashes plus potential. The changeup is a good pitch too but it also needs some work from a consistency standpoint. He has the look of a young Jose Ramirez type of prospect, one who has frontline staring potential or back-end relief possibilities long-term if he continues to develop.

7. OF, Alexander Palma - Signed this year out of Venezuela for a reported $800,000, Palma brings an advanced bat with him into the organization. Internally the Yankees love his long-term hitting potential, both from an average standpoint and potential power down the road, and he has shown solid defensive abilities in the corner outfield spots. The only real concern with Palma is his body, which isn't a problem right now given his youth but it's the type of frame that could put on bat weight down the road if he's not careful. In a lot of ways he resembles a young Jose Tabata type.

8. SS, Jorge Mateo - The 17-year old Dominican native is a bit of a 'sleeper' to fans because of his limited at-bats due to injury in his debut season with DSL Yankees2 this past year, but inside the Yankee organization there isn't much of a difference in opinion between he and Avelino. Like Avelino he shows plus run, plus defense, he can impact the baseball at a young age, and his strike zone discipline is pretty advanced for a teenager. He could really climb the rankings down the road and he'll be one to watch closely.

9. SS, Yancarlos Baez - Signed out of the Dominican Republic for $650,000 this year, Baez is a tall, lanky shortstop who is learning how to switch-hit. He has above average tools across the board and body-wise resembles a young Jimmy Paredes type, one who could take some time to fill into his body but also offers a lot of long-term projection. The results won't come immediately, especially with him learning how to bat left-handed, but the ceiling is pretty vast.

10. 3B/1B, Renzo Martini - The Venezuelan native had a solid second season in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .290 with 22 doubles and five home runs, and walked more than he struck out for the second straight year. Blessed with patience, big league plate discipline, and pitch recognition, he can flat out hit. However, there are some negatives. While he has incredible hands defensively at both first and third base, he has little to no range and that limits his positional value so he's going to have to hit his way up the minor league ladder. Many believe he can and the power is developing, but while the offensive ceiling is pretty vast for the recently turned 20-year old he does have little to fall back on if the bat doesn't continue to play.

11. OF, Wilmer Romero - The 18-year old Dominican native had a very, very solid season in 2012, leading the DSL Yankees1 squad with six home runs, hitting .298, and clubbing 16 doubles. Although the plate discipline isn't great and he still swings and misses a bit too much, he did a lot of work on his swing mechanics and barreled the baseball a lot better. He's not a quick player either and he's still learning to be a more consistent defensive player too, but the bat can certainly play. He has a huge offensive ceiling if things break right.

12. OF, Sandy Brito - This 18-year old switch-hitting Dominican native sure sees a ton of pitches. He walked a ridiculous 61 times in 62 games this past season -- the problem is he struck out a whopping 72 times. The patience is superb, the pitch recognition is above average for a player with his experience, and he can really impact the baseball. The problem is he swings and misses way too much right now and that leaves a lot of caution in his long-term potential, which is immense if he can iron out the swing mechanics. He's not a great defensive outfielder either but he shows good wheels.

13. 2B, Bryan Cuevas - The recently turned 19-year old Dominican native does a little bit of everything; he's a solid defender at second base, he can hit for average, has a good bit of power for a middle infielder, and he has some speed. The plate discipline is just okay though and there's not too much more power projection in the bat considering his rather already strong frame. He's a scrappy player though and could find success while he works his way up the minor league ladder.

14. 3B, Christopher Tamarez - The Yankees' Latin American program is really starting to create some impressive depth of shortstops with the likes of Avelino, Mateo, and others, so much so that Tamarez, a shortstop by trade, has begun moving over to third base. He had a fantastic 2012 campaign for DSL Yankees1 this past season, hitting .338 with a team-leading 18 doubles and six home runs. He's a solid defensive player but has virtually no speed, prompting the move to the hot corner. There are legitimate questions about his long-term power potential now that he's a corner infielder, but the good news is he still has a lot of room to fill out his still rather slender frame.

15. SS, Angel Aguilar - The presence of this 17-year old Venezuelan native is yet another reason why Tamarez is being moved. He fits into the Avelino-Mateo mold as a fine defensive shortstop with an advanced feel for fielding his position, shows good speed, and an above average to borderline plus arm. The plate discipline is a work in progress, however, which isn't uncommon given his extreme youth, but he started to show some power during Dominican Instructs this offseason. He's one whose stock is on the rise.

16. RHP, Christopher Cabrera - The Yankees' top International signing back in 2009 still hasn't made it to the United States, thanks in large part to his thoracic outlet syndrome surgery that derailed him. He has made a full comeback with his stuff, rediscovering his 92-95 mph fastball and plus breaking ball, but the command hasn't come all the way back yet. He's still only going to be 20 years old, however, all of next season but he needs to get States-side and see if he can put his injury behind him.

17. RHP, Erick Canela - One of the standout performers on the mound for the Yankees in the Dominican Summer League this year, all Canela did was post a 7-1 record with a 1.29 ERA and allow just 37 hits in 70 innings while striking out 70 batters. He has a plus fastball that sits 92-94 mph range, a plus power curveball that averages 80-81 mph, and a changeup that has shown a lot progress. That's the good news. The bad news is he turned 22 years old this offseason and really needs to make a move soon -- that's why he gets dinged in the rankings here.

18. RHP, Daury Aquino - This Dominican native is right up there with Canela when it comes to performance and fastball velocity. He too averages 92-94 mph with his fastball and he went 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA for DSL Yankees1 this past season. He has a decent slider too, but like Canela he's going to be 22 years old at the start of the 2013 season and he has yet to come States-side. He also doesn't have quite the swing-and-miss stuff that Canela has either.

19. C, Daniel Vavrusa - This 21-year old Czech Republic native is a plus defensive catcher all the way. He's adept at receiving, blocking, throwing, etc. He even shows advanced plate discipline despite his lack of professional experience. However, he is still getting used to seeing the plethora of power arms that he never saw growing up in Europe and the bat still remains a bit raw. There's a lot to like here but the advanced age is a little worrisome at this point.

20. C, Jesus Aparicio - This 18-year old Venezuelan native is also an advanced catch and throw guy. He's not the plus defensive catcher that Vavrusa is right now but team officials believe he has the chance to be one someday. And while his 2012 numbers might not show it -- .150, one extra-base hit, 17 strikeouts in 21 games -- team officials believe he has the potential to be a solid hitter someday too. There's a lot of work to do refining the overall game but the solid foundation is in place.
