Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/2

Outfielder Jared Hoying joined the Leones de Ponce of the Puerto Rican Winter League on Sunday, batting seventh and playing in right field. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Dominican Winter League

The Tigres del Licey used 10 pitchers in their nine-inning game against the Aguilas Cibaenas, which took more than four hours to complete. Licey dropped the game, 14-1, after coughing up nine runs in the first two innings.

Tigres leadoff hitter and centerfielder Leonys Martin singled once in four at-bats, keeping his batting average steady at .253. Nine-hole hitting right fielder Engel Beltre was 0-for-3, dropping his average to .287. Martin also committed his seventh fielding error of the winterball campaign, a somewhat alarming number.

Leury Garcia got another start at third base for Cibao on Saturday, batting third in the club's order. The speedster went 0-for-3 with a walk but also stole two bases, giving him five on the season.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aragua second baseman Yangervis Solarte went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. He also grounded into a double play.

Mexican Pacific League

Catcher Jose Felix played the first game in Guasave's doubleheader on Sunday and went 0-for-2, striking out twice, with a sacrifice bunt.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Outfielder Jared Hoying joined the Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rico on Sunday. The left-handed hitting prospect, who split the 2012 regular season between High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco, batted seventh and manned right field for Ponce in his winterball debut.

In the game, Hoying singled once in four at-bats. Jorge Alfaro appeared as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning and struck out.

Australian Baseball League

Brisbane's Hirotoshi Onaka extended his modest hitting streak to five games by going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run batted in.

Through 12 Australian Baseball League contests, Onaka is 16-for-45 (.356) with five doubles. He's drawn 11 walks, struck out 10 times, and stolen three bases in five attempts.
