Rangers rebound from rough McCarthy outing

Brandon McCarthy struggled in his second outing of the spring, but the Rangers offense provides enough jolt for the victory.

The Good

Michael Young had a perfect afternoon going 4 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Sammy Sosa kept the buzz going with two hits on the afternoon and is now batting over .450 on the spring. He's also hit safely in all six "A" games he's been a part of.

Marlon Byrd capped off the scoring in the Rangers half of the fourth inning with a two run homer.

Ian Kinsler may have won the offensive MVP of the game with his at-bat in the second inning. Kinsler had the bases loaded and was facing a one ball, two strike count against the Cubs' Ben Howard but the second baseman fought back to even the count before lining a double to the wall in left-center that cleared the bases.

Akinori Otsuka set the Cubs down in order in his inning of work.

Bruce Chen put together another solid outing allowing four hits but no runs over three innings of work.

The Bad

C.J. Wilson had another rough outing allowing three hits, including a homerun to Matt Murton, during his inning of work. His spring earned run average now stands at a paltry 19.29.

Miguel Ojeda went 0 for 3 at the plate with 3 K's.

The Ugly

Brandon McCarthy was nowhere near as good as he was in his first spring outing. McCarthy gave up seven hits, two of them via the longball, and five runs in two innings of work this afternoon. He started the game and was scheduled to go three innings but was yanked after facing just one batter in the top of the third. Considering that the Cubs started only one regular today in Mark DeRosa, this isn't particularly reassuring.

Notable

Ron Washington has been invited to coach third for the American League All-Star team in this year's All-Star Game to be played in San Francisco.

Erig Gagne is scheduled to face hitters for the first time this spring in a "B" game on Monday morning.

The Rangers will rest most of their regulars tommorow including Hank Blalock, Michael Young, and Mark Teixeira as they travel to Scotsdale to take on the San Francisco Giants. Robinson Tejeda will start for the Rangers against almost-Ranger Barry Zito of the Giants.

Injury Report

Nelson Cruz, who has also been battling shin splins, was scratched from the lineup this afternoon with tightness in his left hamstring. He was replaced by Freddy Guzman.
