Rangers continue to mash

Just one day after posting 10 runs on 21 hits, the Rangers' bats went off for 10 runs on 17 hits against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at Surprise Stadium.

The Good

The Rangers' offense came through once again, as they pounded out 10 runs on 17 hits to defeat the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

Mark Teixeira, who was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, and three runs batted in, hit his first home run of the spring in the eighth inning.

Kenny Lofton and Michael Young each singled three times in four at bats. Ian Kinsler and Brad Wilkerson also had multi-hit performances, notching two singles apiece.

Just one day after going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, second baseman Tug Hulett doubled high off the right field wall in his only at bat on Monday. Hulett has doubled in all three of his Major League at bats this spring.

Relievers Akinori Otsuka and Joaquin Benoit were sharp on the mound. Both tossed perfect innings. Otsuka fanned two in his frame while Benoit struck out all three. Benoit has surrendered just two hits in 7.1 innings this spring, walking none and fanning 11.

The Bad

Jamey Wright's spring training ERA continued to take a turn for the worse on Monday, as the right-hander allowed five runs on six hits – including two home runs – in 5.1 frames. Wright, who walked one and did not record a strikeout, has yielded 11 earned runs in 12 innings over his last three appearances.

The Ugly

Once again, there was nothing particularly ugly about this one. Though Jamey Wright did not pitch particularly well, he threw strikes and was in-line for the victory upon leaving in the sixth inning.

Notable

The Rangers claimed right-handed pitcher Ezequiel Astacio off waivers from the Houston Astros on Monday.

To make room for Astacio on the 40-man roster, reliever Rick Bauer was designated for assignment. Bauer had allowed 15 runs on 19 hits in 6.1 innings this spring.

The club also added infielder Adam Fox to the 40-man roster. Rules state that the 40-man roster must have too many players in order for a player to be designated for assignment. Fox will likely be dropped off of the 40-man roster before the team leaves Surprise on Thursday.

The Rangers remain in Surprise, as they will face the San Diego Padres at 3:05 p.m. CST on Tuesday afternoon. The game will be broadcast on XPRS-AM in San Diego and can be heard on MLB.com's Gameday Audio. Kevin Millwood will take the mound for the Rangers against former Braves teammate Greg Maddux.
