Padilla latest in string of bad outings

A disturbing spring trend rears its ugly head again as another member of the starting rotation gets roughed up in an 11-8 loss to Seattle.

The Good

Frank Catalanotto, who has had a relatively quiet spring, went 3 for 4 yesterday afternoon with an RBI single and a run scored.

Miguel Ojeda connected on a three-run homer against his former team in the top of the ninth, although it now seems he's behind a guy having an unbelievable spring in Chris Stewart for the backup catcher spot.

Still hoping to win a bench spot, Ramon Vasquez had a 2 for 2 afternoon with a run scored.

Mike Wood came on for Scott Feldman in the fifth and went the rest of the way allowing no runs and only one hit while striking out three.

The Bad

Two fielding errors committed by Ian Kinsler at second base yesterday. And although he went 1 for 4 at the plate, he stranded six guys on base.

Scott Feldman had to leave the game after being hit by a line drive in the fifth inning. He received a bruised arm for his efforts, but should be fine.

The Ugly

Tuesday it was Kevin Millwood getting shellacked in his final tune-up before the regular season. Yesterday it was Vicente Padilla not faring very well against the Mariner offense. he lasted 4 1/3 innings and was pounded for 10 runs on 11 hits. He also earned a warning for the Rangers after plunking Seattle catcher Kenji Johjima.

Notable

Your winner of the fifth spot in the starting rotation: Officially, it's Jamey Wright. Kameron Loe, the runner up, will be a part of the Rangers bullpen, at least to begin the year. Because the Rangers do not need a fifth starter before April 10, Wright has agreed to make one start on April 5 for Double-A Frisco before being called up.

It eppears likely that Joaquin Arias and John Rheinecker will begin the year on the disabled list for the Rangers. Arias has yet to play in the field because of injury problems involving his shoulder. Rheinecker, meanwhile, has been suffering from back spasms have only allowed him to pitch in a few minor league games.

Sammy Sosa is expected to return to the lineup this afternoon. He has missed the past four games with a stomach virus.

This afternoon, the Rangers will play their final game of the spring in Arizona as they take on the Royals in Surprise. Brandon McCarthy will pitch first for Texas.
