The Texas Rangers made their opening day roster complete with a few transactions on Saturday night.
The club has announced that RHP Ezequiel Astacio, OF Marlon Byrd, and C Guillermo Quiroz have been designated for assignment. Catcher Miguel Ojeda was also optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma.
With Ojeda and Quiroz out of the picture, this means that 25-year-old Chris Stewart will enter the season as the Rangers' backup catcher. Stewart hit .450 with five RBI in 20 spring at bats.
Matt Kata will join Jerry Hairston, Jr. as the team's utility players on the 25-man roster.
The Rangers will also purchase the contracts of pitchers Mike Wood and Bruce Chen, who will both begin the season in the bullpen. Wood especially pitched well this spring, as he allowed just two runs in 14 innings pitched.
Right-hander Francisco Cruceta and infielder Adam Fox, who had both cleared waivers earlier in the week, were outrighted to the Minor Leagues.
