The Rafters faced the difficult task of going up against Yankees hurler Phil Hughes in their first game of the Fall League season. Hughes was dominant, surrendering just one hit in five scoreless innings. He struck out seven and walked five.

Willie Eyre got the start opposite Hughes, making his first appearance since August 16, 2007. The right-hander, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, allowed three runs in 2.2 innings. He gave up two hits while walking two and fanning three.

Julio Borbon batted leadoff and played centerfield for Surprise. He was 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.

First baseman Chad Tracy singled once in four at-bats.

Hard-throwing righty John Bannister made quick work of Peoria with a perfect nine-pitch sixth inning.
