Woodyard Lands With Eagles

With only two weekends left before signing day, it is crunch time for schools to bring in the best possible talent and have a cornerstone for the future of the football program. Southern Miss picked up a big commitment today from a player they had been after for quite a long time. Goldeneaglepride.com talked with Jamal Woodyard today about his commitment to Southern Miss.

Woodyard, running back out of Fairhope, AL, has been coveted by schools across the southeast since his sophomore year. An ankle injury late in his senior year chased a few schools away, but Southern Miss never stopped pursuing the star running back.

"Southern Miss was there all along, they have been recruiting me since I was a junior, and they kept after me even after I got hurt," he said.

In the end, it came down to two schools. "Southern Miss and Troy were the two schools that I was deciding between. I just liked Southern Miss better," he said.

As with so many of the current recruits, the coaching staff's personal relationships played a huge role in his landing with the Eagles. "I have really bonded with these coaches, I've gotten to know them for over a year, and we have gotten real close," he said.

He added, "I just love the offense, I know that even though they run the spread they like to run the ball, so I know I'll get an opportunity."

Jamal was not alone in this decision, as his Mom had a say so as well into his future home. "My Mom was real big on Southern Miss because of the high graduation rate. She really wanted me to go there for my education," he said.

For now, his official visits are over and he is going to celebrate his commitment by relaxing a little bit. "It feels real good now that this process is over. I'm just glad to be a Golden Eagle and know where I will be in the future," he said.

Golden Eagle fans are thrilled to have another star running back who can compliment the talent already in place. Woodyard is a great kid who will be a perfect fit in Hattiesburg. "I am 100 percent healthy and ready to go. I cant wait to get in school there," he said.
