On Monday night the Durham offense exploded for 18 hits and 13 runs against Charlotte pitching. On Tuesday though, their bats were silenced by Charlotte starter Eric Stults in a 5-0 loss to the Knights at Durham Athletic Park.
Alex Cobb, who was making his second start of the season, pitched seven innings of two-run ball, but was outmatched by Stults who allowed only two hits in his six innings of work. Marquis Fleming let a close came get out of hand by allowing three runs in his two innings of work.
Durham had the bases loaded in the seventh inning after a lead-off single by Jesus Feliciano and walks by Kyle Hudson and Shawn O'Malley. Tim Beckham would strike out to end the inning though and that would end up being the Bulls best scoring opportunity of the night.
Charlotte relievers Donnie Veal and Duente Heath preserved the shutout by combining to pitch three scoreless innings.
Notes: SS Tim Beckham's at bat with the bases loaded in the seventh was the fourth time this season he had come to the plate with the bases juiced. --- RP Marquis Fleming struggled mightily with his control walking four hitters in his two innings of work. --- SP Alex Cobb has given up only three earned runs on the season, spanning 12 innings and two starts. --- Game 162 hero Dan Johnson, who was the Rays Minor League Player of the Year while with Durham in 2010, had a double and a RBI groundout. --- Despite being shut out and in large part due to the 13 run outburst on Monday, Durham leads the International League in runs scored with 30.
Dyer had no real issues in his six innings of work and allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking none.
The Biscuits had several opportunities to put the game out of reach early, but they stranded nine runners over the first five innings.
Notes: After a poor showing at the plate on Monday, top-of-the-lineup hitters Hak-Ju Lee and Tyler Bortnick combined to go 3-for-10 with a walk and three RBI. --- In two starts spanning 11 innings, opposing hitters are batting only .167 off of Dyer. --- INF Cole Figueroa extended his hitting streak to six by hitting a double and he leads the Southern League in OPS with a 1.138 mark. --- INF Omar Luna remains one of the team's hottest hitters and is 6-for-11 with 5 RBI in his last three games. --- 1B Henry Wrigley who walked only 23 times in 118 games in 2011, reached base three times via the free pass on Tuesday.
Wednesday: Away against the Mississippi Braves at 12 PM ET. (Alexander Colome 1-0 5.40)
St. Lucie starter Angel Cuan handcuffed the Stone Crabs lineup and held them to two fifth inning singles and no runs over seven innings, as the Mets beat Charlotte for the second straight night.
Wilking Rodriguez made his first start of 2012 and pitched well enough to keep his team in the game by allowing only two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Catcher Luke Bailey was one of the few bright spots offensively, as he tripled and scored in the eighth and drove in the team's second run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.
The win by St. Lucie broke the tie with the Stone Crabs atop the Florida State League South Division.
Notes: 3B Riccio Torrez got the Stone Crabs first hit of the game in the fifth and now has a five game hitting streak to open the 2012 campaign. --- Charlotte hitters have only drawn 10 walks in five games, a total which is tied for last in the FSL. --- The team did not have a stolen base attempt in a game for the first time this season. --- Bailey's multi-hit game was his second this season. --- OF Mikie Mahtook struck out for the first time this season in 17 at bats.
After clawing their way back into the game and tying the score in the top of the ninth, the Hot Rods lost on a walk-off single in the botton half of the frame by Colin Kaline. The 4-3 loss is the third straight for the club after winning their first two games of the season.
It looked good early for Bowling Green when Ryan Brett led off the game with a triple and scored on a ground ball by Drew Vettleson on the very next pitch. They would not score again however until Joel Caminero delivered a two-run, broken bat single to score Cameron Seitzer and Jeff Malm.
Hot Rods starter Roberto Gomez went five innings allowing two runs on six hits and a walk.
Notes: 1B Jeff Malm doubled for the second consecutive night. --- OF Kes Carter has at least one hit in all four games he has appeared in, including a three hit effort against South Bend last Saturday. --- RP Stayton Thomas suffered his second loss of the year in as many appearances. --- The Bowling Green staff has shown remarkable command as a group walking just five hitters in 47.1 innings. --- Caminero's game-tying hit ended an 0-for-12 to start the season.
Wednesday: Away against West Michigan Whitecaps at 12:00 PM ET. (Jake Floethe 1-0 0.00)
