Surprise 8 vs. Peoria 4

Surprise claimed its first victory of the Fall season by downing Peoria 8-4 at home.

St. Louis' Boone Whiting tossed the first two innings for the Saguaros. The righty stranded Javelinas' shortstop Jeudy Valdez (SD) who led off the contest with a double. However, Whiting was bitten by a lead-off base-on-balls in the second. The walk was followed by consecutive singles that brought one run across and left runners at second and third with none out. Whiting limited the damage by retiring the next three batters on a fly out to shallow center, swinging strikeout and a pop out to first.

Peoria's lead evaporated in the bottom of the third when Surprise knocked in two on two singles, a fielding error and a double. That made a winner out of southpaw Jimmy Reyes (TEX), who tossed half of the four scoreless frames notched by Saguaros pitchers.

Surprise padded its lead with a five-run fourth that was ignited by St. Louis' Colin Walsh. The number two hitter's two-out double to center drove in two. The left fielder advanced to third on a wild pitch and scampered home on a line-drive single up the middle by right fielder Bryce Brentz (BOS).

Walsh accounted for his squad's final tally when he worked a free pass to open the sixth. He advanced to second on a missed catch error by the Javelinas' second baseman and reached third on a single that loaded the bases. The 23-year-old was forced in when center fielder Cesar Puello (NYM) was plunked.

Walsh finished his busy day with two runs scored and two RBI. As a taxi squad player, he is eligible to play on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.

Batting sixth, catcher Cody Stanley had a second-inning single in five at bats with three strikeouts. Lefty Sam Freeman sandwiched two strikeouts around a single in his scoreless ninth. Freeman was the seventh and final Surprise pitcher of the day.

All four Cardinals were making their AFL debuts in the second game on the fall schedule.

Thursday's game: vs. Mesa, 2:35 pm CT (12:35 pm GMT), St. Louis' Seth Blair is the scheduled starter for the Saguaros.
