Blue Jays vs. Red Sox: Outfield Prospects

Comparing what the Red Sox and Blue Jays have at each position in the minor leagues, we take a look at the crop of outfield prospects in each system. Which system is deeper? Which prospects have the most power? The highest ceilings? Take a look at this comparison between the two rival AL East farm systems.

The Two Farm Systems: Both Boston and Toronto have some real potential impact players at the outfield position in their respective farm systems.

Boston's top outfield prospect right now both from a projection standpoint and safeness in reaching his potential respect is right fielder Bryce Brentz. Possessing plus power potential to all fields, the 2010 first round pick slugged 30 home runs in his first full season last year and he has a lot more left in the tank. An aggressive hitter, he does have solid plate discipline even though drawing walks is not a priority and blessed with plus arm strength, he's a better defensive outfielder than people give him credit for. It's just a matter of time before he becomes a fixture in the heart of the Red Sox lineup.

Right behind him on the outfield prospect depth chart is the athletic Brandon Jacobs. Originally committed to play football for Auburn University out of high school, the Red Sox lured him over to baseball with a $750,000 signing bonus. He showed his plus power, above average speed combination last year hitting 17 home runs and stealing 30 bases in his first full season. His swing is still a little too long and strikeouts can be a problem, as can his rather raw defensive abilities, but the ceiling is sky-high here.

Toronto has a trio of incredibly high-ceiling outfield talents of their own in the form of Anthony Gose, Jake Marisnick, and Jacob Anderson. Gose, obtained from the Phillies in the Roy Halladay deal, is one of the toolsiest players in all of minor league baseball. While he has some contact issues and strikes out too much, his power is above average for a centerfielder, his defensive abilities are all-world including a plus arm, and his speed is exceptional. He can be the most electrifying player on the field at any given time but like Jacobs strikeouts can be a problem.

Marisnick, who will be 21 years old this coming season, might be the safest bet in either organization to be a budding big league All Star because of his command of the strike zone, above average power potential, above average speed, and above average defensive abilities. It remains to be seen if he will have to move to a corner outfield spot given he's not as defensively gifted as Gose [few are], but the entire game will play there well too. He has close to Jacobs' ceiling without the major question marks.

Anderson, one of Toronto's supplemental first round picks last year, has immense potential too. He's not the speedster that Gose or Marisnick are and therefore he's not the same kind of defensive player, but his overall hitting ability matches that of Marisnick and he has more power potential than either player. Think Brandon Jacobs power-wise but more gifted defensively.

Boston's high ceiling outfielders are not limited to just Brentz and Jacobs, however. Both Henry Ramos, a switch-hitting Puerto Rican native drafted in the fifth round in 2010, and Williams Jerez, drafted out of high school in the second round last year, offer some incredible upside of their own. Each has above average power and speed potential, and both have to further develop their plate discipline to make reaching their very high ceilings more of a reality.

A little more battle tested at this point, Toronto has a pair of talented outfielder with significant upside too. Both Canadian natives, Michael Crouse and Marcus Knecht have not yet become household names in prospect circles, but both have that kind of potential and the kind of all-around games that could allow them to be impact players down the road. Crouse in particular, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, is built like an NFL linebacker and has incredible tools; plus throwing arm, plus power potential, above average speed. Like Gose he has his fair share of contact issues but he can be dominant for long stretches. He doesn't get the same press as Jacobs but he's right up there talent-wise.

Knecht doesn't have quite the ceiling that Crouse has but he has better overall hitting ability, making it more likely that his game will continue to develop. He doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well, but he's solid in every aspect of the game and offers some safeness in his projection.

The same can be said of one of Boston's first round picks last year, centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. The former University of South Carolina standout has plus bat speed, uses the whole field, has average power potential, average to slightly above average speed, plus arm strength, and is solid defensively in centerfield. He projects to be a high-average hitter who could contribute in a lot of varying ways on the field and in the batter's box.

Like Bradley Jr., Toronto has a pair of potentially high-average hitters who might not possess the great power potential some of these other players possess, but both have the chance to impact the game offensively. Chris Hawkins, a former infielder, possesses a sweet swing from the left side and at least average tools in all the other categories. He is quicker than most folks realize and shows good power with above average power potential, but it's his command of the strike zone and quick-twitch bat that makes him a much safer bet of reaching his long-term potential. Think of a young Eric Hinske from the left side for a good MLB comparison.

Dwight Smith Jr., a supplemental first round pick in 2011, has big league bloodlines and a professional approach to hitting. He isn't very toolsy overall but the tools are at least big league average, and like Hawkins, it's his ability to use the whole field and hit the gaps with regularity that should make him one of the safer bets to reach his ceiling someday.

Not really possessing the same upside as either Hawkins or Smith, Boston has a trio of quality outfield prospects who safely project as big league reserve outfielders at minimum. Alex Hassan is good hitter with gap power but limited home run power, shows great patience and strike zone judgement, plus arm strength, and is solid defensively in the other aspects of the game.

Che-Hsuan Lin, a 23-year old Taiwan native, has superb plate discipline, above average speed, a solid swing, plus arm strength and is great defensively. He does not have much power projection and projects best as a fourth outfielder type, but it's a safe bet that he reaches that ceiling.

Boston's Jeremy Hazelbaker, a 4th round pick in 2009 out of Ball State, has plus speed akin to that of Toronto's Anthony Gose and solid now power, and he draws a good number of walks. He, like Gose, strikes out a bit too much but he's not quite the same defensive outfielder. He projects best a plus defensive left fielder than a true centerfielder, but he can play all three outfield positions if need be. He has more upside than Hassan or Lin, but also safely projects as a backup outfielder at minimum.

While they're not quite the same athletes as the aforementioned players, Toronto has both Moises Sierra and Brad Glenn ready for the upper minor league levels, and each has the one above average to plus tool that will keep them in potential big league discussions. Glenn, who led the Florida State League in home runs in 2011, has the kind of plus power to maybe force his way into a big league lineup but the other aspects of his game lag behind.

Sierra, a Dominican native, doesn't have a plus hit tool like Glenn's power but his game is more sound overall, showing above average power with room for more, decent speed, and a tremendous throwing arm. He does a little bit of everything which is enough to make him a viable big league option.

Both organizations have some high upside outfield prospects worth keeping an eye on at the lower levels. Boston's Kendrick Perkins, a former football star who was going to go to Texas A&M, is a 6-2, 225 pound left-handed batter, who has some real offensive potential. A sixth round pick in 2010, while his outfield defense needs work in left field, he has decent speed and could hit for power as he matures. The same can be said of Keury De La Cruz, a Dominican left-handed batter. He is a bit undersized but shows good speed and power combo, and some decent hitting ability. He needs to show more patience at the plate.

Toronto's Dalton Pompey, a switch-hitting Canadian native, is De La Cruz-like but with a lot more patience at the plate. He shows good power and even better speed, and just needs to iron out his swing mechanics from both sides of the plate like all young switch-hitters need to do to become more consistent offensively.

Each organization has some other outfield prospects worth tracking in the coming years but have enough shortcomings that their ceilings are not quite as high. Toronto's Eric Arce has good 'now' power and exceptional plate discipline, but his smaller stature leaves little room for long-term projection. Kevin Pillar is Hawkins-like in that he can do a lot of things pretty well, including playing all three outfield positions.

Boston's Matt Marquis has a plus arm, average power, and he's above average defensively, but has no real speed despite his athleticism. Like Pillar, he needs to show more at the higher levels before scouts are sold on his long-term potential.

Perhaps the biggest wild card in either organization is Boston's Ryan Westmoreland. Once a budding star prospect two years ago, he developed a life threatening cavernous malformation on his brain stem that needed to be removed. He hasn't played in two years but if he should come back and resume his top prospect status, it could be a game-changer in this comparison between the two farm systems. For now though it's a wait and see proposition.

How Do They Compare In...

Power: Having Brentz around soon at the higher minor league levels gives Boston a slight edge in the power department even though the Jays have Moises Sierra Double-A tested and Brad Glenn's plus power ptoential, Brentz's power is that special. But while Boston has the likes of Ramos, Jerez, and certainly Brandon Jacobs at the A-level and below, the Blue Jays combat that with the likes of Crouse, Marisnick, Anderson, and have even more depth behind them with Hawkins, Pompey, Knecht, etc. Toronto just has too much depth power-wise at the outfield position. Advantage: Blue Jays

Hitting For Average: The presence of Ryan Kalish at the upper levels gives Boston some real help here as does the selection of Jackie Bradley Jr. in the first round last year, but once again it's not enough depth to overtake the likes of Marisnick, Hawkins, Dwight Smith Jr., and Jacob Anderson at the lower levels. Advantage: Blue Jays

Defense: While Boston has some high upside hitters at the outfield position with the likes of Jacobs, Brentz, Ramos, Perkins and Jerez, they're not quite the same defensive players that Marisnick, Crouse, Anderson, and others are right now. Boston's Che-Hsuan Lin, Matt Marquis, and Alex Hassan are all really good defensive players, but they all project to be more reserve outfielder types so while presently the Red Sox have more depth, it might not have the same impact Toronto's players should have, especially with Anthony Gose being a Gold Glove defensive player right now. Advantage: Blue Jays

Speed: This is the one area where Boston has a real edge depth-wise. Toronto's Anthony Gose and Boston's Jeremy Hazelbaker cancel each other out, and while the Blue Jays seemingly have the next best speed guys right behind them with Marisnick and Crouse, it's not quite the same depth that Boston's Jerez, Jackie Bradley Jr., Henry Ramos, Che-Hsuan Lin, and Keury De La Cruz provide. Advantage: Red Sox.

Overall Potential: The presence of Bryce Brentz and Brandon Jacobs, not to mention the high upsides of Williams Jerez and Henry Ramos as well as the safe projection of Jackie Bradley Jr. gives Boston a lot of depth. However, it's tough to come close to Toronto's sheer number of high upside outfielders at this point; Gose, Marisnick, Anderson, Crouse, Dwight Smith Jr., Dalton Pompey, etc, etc. The Blue Jays have quite a few more baskets for their eggs at this point but that could change should Westmoreland come back healthy and productive. Advantage: Blue Jays.

Highest Ceilings: Anthony Gose (Blue Jays), Brandon Jacobs (Red Sox), Bryce Brentz (Red Sox), Jacob Anderson (Blue Jays), Michael Crouse (Blue Jays)

Best Power: Bryce Brentz (Red Sox), Brandon Jacobs (Red Sox), Jacob Anderson (Blue Jays), Jake Marisnick (Blue Jays), Michael Crouse (Blue Jays)

Best Average: Jake Marisnick (Blue Jays), Jackie Bradley Jr. (Red Sox), Chris Hawkins (Blue Jays), Jacob Anderson (Blue Jays), Dwight Smith Jr. (Blue Jays)

Best Defense: Anthony Gose (Blue Jays), Che-Hsuan Lin (Red Sox), Jake Marisnick (Blue Jays), Michael Crouse (Blue Jays), Jackie Bradley Jr. (Red Sox)

Best Speed: Anthony Gose (Blue Jays), Jeremy Hazelbaker (Red Sox), Michael Crouse (Blue Jays), Jake Marisnick (Blue Jays), Williams Jerez (Red Sox).
