Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/25

Aguilas del Zulia starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan pitched well in Venezuela once again, as he yielded one earned run in five innings on Sunday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Dominican Winter League

Gigantes del Cibao shortstop Leury Garcia (.306/.346/.439) recorded his third consecutive multi-hit performance, as he singled three times in five at-bats on Sunday. Through 24 winterball contests, Garcia is 30-for-98 with five doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He's drawn five walks, struck out 21 times, and stolen three bases in five attempts.

Sidearming right-hander Johan Yan (2.89 ERA/.229 BAA) induced a groundout to the only batter he faced on Sunday.

Although he's spent much of the winterball campaign as Licey's leadoff hitter, scuffling centerfielder Leonys Martin (.264/.345/.413) dropped to sixth in the batting order on Sunday and responded with two singles in four at-bats. He also drove home a run.

Right fielder Engel Beltre (.299/.357/.455) saw his batting average dip under .300 with yet another hitless performance––this time going 0-for-4. Beltre is 3-for-22 (.136 – all singles) over his last 10 games.

Jurickson Profar appeared as a pinch-runner in the top of the ninth inning and scored a run. He didn't have a plate appearance.

Venezuelan Winter League

Aguilas del Zulia starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan (0.95 ERA/.216 BAA) allowed a rare earned run on Sunday and didn't factor in the decision. The 23-year-old hurler yielded three runs––just one earned––on four hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Boscan now has the following stat-line through eight starts––38.0 ip, 29 h, 4 er, 11 bb, 25 k.

Lara utilityman Guilder Rodriguez entered as a late-inning defensive replacement in right field and walked in his only plate appearance. He also scored a run.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

There were no Liga Paralela games on Sunday.

Mexican Pacific League

No Rangers appeared in Mexico on Sunday.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Second baseman Janluis Castro got his first winterball start for Caguas and went hitless in three at-bats. The switch-hitting Puerto Rico native was the Rangers' 16th-round pick in this past summer's MLB Draft.

The Leones de Ponce played a doubleheader on Sunday with a pair of seven-inning contests. Left fielder Mike Bianucci combined to go 1-for-7 with a walk and a strikeout while catcher Jorge Alfaro went 2-for-7 with a double, an RBI, and three strikeouts.

In the first game, left-hander Alexander Claudio came out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout against the only hitter he faced. Righty Alex de la Cruz followed by giving up a hit (but not a run) in one-third of an inning. Still, the hit allowed an inherited runner to score and de la Cruz was stuck with the blown save.
