Almora leads Mesa to win

He may be one of the youngest players in the Arizona Fall league but Albert Almora continues to hit the cover off the ball as the center fielder ripped two doubles and drove in two runs in Mesa's 7-4 win. Kris Bryant was named AFL player of the week.

Arizona Fall League

Albert Almora did all his damage in the Solar Sox seven-run third leading of with a walk and scoring. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, he ripped a ground-rule double to left-center to plate both runners. Almora (.571) added a double in the fifth, finishing the day 2-4 with a walk.

Jorge Soler extended his AFL hitting streak to five games with a single in the fourth but the outfielder is only hitting .192. Soler finished 1-5 with two strikeouts.

Armando Rivero (0-0 3.00 ERA) surrendered his first run as a bloop double in the eighth that led to a run on a sacrifice fly. Rivero also allowed a single in his inning of work, throwing 21 pitches, 13 for strikes.

Kris Bryant had the day off but was named Arizona Fall League co-player of the week. Its the third league Bryant has earned player of the week honors, going 8-16 with two homers and seven RBI in three games.

Venezuelan Winter League

Yoanner Negrin (Iowa) made his second start of the season for Caracas after tossing five shutout innings with seven strikeouts in his opening day start. The right-hander only allowed one hit but it was a three-run homer in the fourth. He went five innings, yielding three walks with three punchouts in the no decision.

Dave Sappelt, who spent time in Chicago and AAA Iowa, was added to the Margarita roster and made his first start Tuesday night. The outfielder went 1-4 with a single in a 4-3 loss to Aragua.

Yeiper Castillo took the loss in Zulia's 7-4 loss to Magallanes allowing three runs on four hits, including a homer, in two-thirds of an inning.

Roster Moves

RHP Ryan Searle announced on twitter he has resigned with the Cubs for the 2014 minor league season. Searle was lights out to start the season earning FSL Pitcher of the Week honors after 8.1 scoreless innings in April and a league leading 0.48 WHIP in the first two weeks. He allowed 12 runs in his next two starts and went on the disabled list, not returning to the D-Cubs until Aug. 15. Searle finished the year 2-3 with a 5.67 ERA in 27 IP. The 24-year-old Australian was dominating in the playoffs, recording two saves in both series clinching games in the playoffs. He fired four innings in the division series final and then tossed four no-hit innings, getting the final 12 outs in the FSL championship clinching game.
