EXCLUSIVE: Sox Make AFL Changes

The Red Sox announced today that catcher Dusty Brown, pitcher Craig Hansen and first baseman Chris Carter have been added to the Mesa Solar Sox roster of the Arizona Fall League. (FREE PREVIEW OF PREMIUM CONTENT)

Brown's addition has long been expected, and he would have been the seventh member of the organization sent to the AFL. But the additions of Hansen and Carter come as a surprise, particularly since the Sox weeks ago announced the rest of their AFL assignments.

Hansen was the Sox' second pick in the 2005 draft—after Jacoby Ellsbury and before Clay Buchholz—but his star has dimmed considerably after two straight subpar seasons. Carter, meanwhile, was the player to be named later in last month's Wily Mo Pena trade and has hit well the last two years at Triple-A, but as a defensively limited first baseman, he does not seem to fit in with the Sox at the big league level.

With Hansen and Carter heading to Arizona, pitcher Kyle Jackson and first baseman Aaron Bates—both of whom were on the original Mesa roster—are no longer headed for the AFL. Four other Sox prospects remain scheduled to play for Mesa: Pitchers Daniel Haigwood, Hunter Jones and Jose Vaquedano and infielder Jed Lowrie.

Each organization is allowed to send at least six players to the AFL. Any players beyond that number are placed on a taxi squad and only permitted to play Wednesdays and Saturdays. The AFL begins play Oct. 9 and continues until the championship game Nov. 17.
