Seven Hurlers Among Sox' Non-Roster Invitees

The Red Sox invited 15 players to their major league camp as non-roster players, including pitchers Michael Bowden, Lee Gronkiewicz, Hunter Jones, Dan Kolb, Justin Masterson, Jon Switzer and Michael Tejera. Below are thumbnail sketches of the seven hurlers.

Michael Bowden, P: Bowden, 21, went 10-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 27 starts between Single-A Lancaster and Double-A Portland last year. Bowden was ranked 27th in Diehard's 2006 prospect issue and seventh in the 2007 issue and is ranked among the top 10 this year. He was selected by the Sox out of an Illinois high school in the supplemental round of the 2005 draft. Bowden will wear uniform number 79.

Lee Gronkiewicz, P: Gronkiewicz, 29, made his big league debut last year for the Blue Jays, when he allowed one run in four innings of relief June 19. He went 6-3 with a 2.41 ERA and 11 saves between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Syracuse. Gronkiewicz, who was signed by the Sox as a minor league free agent, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indians in 2001. He will wear uniform number 68.

Hunter Jones, P: Jones, 24, went 6-2 with a 2.62 ERA and two saves between Single-A Lancaster and Double-A Portland last year. Jones is ranked 21st in Diehard's 2008 prospect issue. He was signed by the Sox as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State in 2005. Jones will wear uniform number 75.

Dan Kolb, P: Kolb, 32, recorded a 9.00 ERA in three innings over three appearances with the Pirates last year and went 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA and 12 saves for their Triple-A affiliate, Indianapolis. In a big league career dating back to 1999, Kolb is 11-23 with a 4.36 ERA and 73 saves for the Rangers, Brewers, Braves and Pirates. He made the NL All-Star team in 2004, when he recorded a career-high 39 saves. Kolb was originally drafted by the Rangers in the sixth round of the 1995 draft. He will wear uniform number 41.

Justin Masterson, P: Masterson, 22, went 12-8 with a 4.33 ERA between Single-A Lancaster and Double-A Portland last year. Masterson was ranked 12th in Diehard's 2007 prospect issue and is ranked among the top 10 this year. He was selected by the Sox out of San Diego State in the second round of the 2006 draft. He will wear uniform number 73.

Jon Switzer, P: Switzer, 28, went 0-2 with a 8.05 ERA in 21 games for the Rays last year and recorded a 0.82 ERA and one save in 23 relief appearances for the Triple-A affiliate, Durham. Switzer appeared in 68 games for the Rays between 2003 and 2007, during which he went 2-4 with a 6.11 ERA. He was originally drafted by the Rays out of Arizona State in the second round of the 2001 draft. He will wear uniform number 59.

Michael Tejera, P: Tejera, 31, went 8-5 with a 3.90 ERA in 27 games (19 starts) for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate, Indianapolis, last year. In a big league career dating back to 1999, Tejera is 11-13 with a 5.14 ERA and three saves for the Marlins and Rangers. He was teammates with Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell on the Marlins' 2003 world championship club and last appeared in the majors with the Rangers in 2005, when he posted a 13.50 ERA in two innings over three appearances. Tejera was originally drafted by the Marlins in the sixth round of the 1995 draft. He will wear uniform number 40.
