Sox Release Six Minor Leaguers

The Red Sox made their first wave of cuts at minor league camp Friday, when they released six players: Infielders Michael Chambers, Victor Serrano and Junior Spivey, outfielder Paul Smyth and pitchers Ismael Casillas and Barry Hertzler.

Michael Chambers: Selected by the Sox in the 32nd round of the 2006 draft out of Division III Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire…Hit just .157 with no homers and four RBI in 102 at-bats last season at Single-A Greenville…Also made two appearances on the mound, throwing a scoreless inning with one strikeout…Hit .250 with three homers and 20 RBI in 164 at-bats at short-season Single-A Lowell in 2006…Turned 24 years old in January.

Victor Serrano: Signed by the Sox as an undrafted free agent out of Venezuela in 2004…Spent last season with the short-season Single-A Gulf Coast League Red Sox, for whom he hit .260 with no homers, nine RBI and 11 stolen bases in 123 at-bats…Drew just one walk while striking out 22 times…Played for the Sox' Venezuelan Summer League club in 2004 and 2005 and for the Sox' Dominican Summer League club in 2006…Hit .274 with one homer, 44 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 519 at-bats…Turns 22 years old in June.

Junior Spivey: Signed by the Sox out of the independent Atlantic League in August 2006…Hit .241 with two homers and 14 RBI in 86 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket following his signing…Made the National League All-Star team in 2002, when he hit .301 with 16 homers, 78 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 103 runs scored for the Diamondbacks…A lifetime .270 hitter with 48 homers, 201 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 457 big league games for the Diamondbacks, Brewers and Nationals…Selected by the Diamondbacks in the 36th round of the 1996 draft…Turned 33 in January.

Paul Smyth: Selected by the Sox in the 27th round of the 2006 draft out of San Diego State University…Hit .317 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 145 at-bats for Single-A Greenville last year…Also had 10 doubles, one triple, seven walks and 30 strikeouts…Hit .266 with four homers, 24 RBI, six stolen bases and a team-high 29 runs scored in 188 at-bats at short-season Single-A Lowell in 2006…Was a teammate of Justin Masterson at San Diego State…Turns 25 in April.

Ismael Casillas: Selected by the Sox in the 11th round of the 2005 draft out of Benedictine College in Kansas…Went 4-4 with a 6.14 ERA and three saves in 35 relief appearances at Single-A Lancaster last year…Struck out 61 while allowing 65 hits and 34 walks in 66 innings…Played for short-season Single-A Lowell in 2005 and Single-A Greenville in 2006…Went 5-6 with a 3.55 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 102 innings between the affiliates…Turns 26 in December.

Barry Hertzler: Selected by the Sox in the 11th round of the 2003 draft out of Central Connecticut State University…Went 4-3 with a 6.01 ERA and one save between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last year…Struck out 28 while allowing 89 hits and 26 walks in 70 1/3 innings…Has also played for short-season Single-A Lowell, Single-A Augusta and Single-A Wilmington dating back to 2003…Went 20-13 with a 4.26 ERA and 12 saves in 186 games (12 starts)…Turned 27 in February.
