PawSox Opening Day Roster: Position Players

The Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A International League affiliate of the Red Sox, open their season Thursday against Indianapolis. Here are thumbnail sketches of the 12 position players on the PawSox roster. Thumbnails of the 12 pitchers appear in a separate story.

Dusty Brown: Hit .260 with nine homers and 46 RBI last year between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket…Is beginning a season in Triple-A for the first time in his eight-year career…Ranked 33rd in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Selected by the Sox out of an Arizona high school in the 35th round of the 2000 draft.

George Kottaras: Hit .241 with nine homers and 39 RBI last year for Triple-A Pawtucket…Ranked 39th in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Acquired from the Padres as the player to be named later in the David Wells trade in September 2006.


INFIELDERS

Keith Ginter: Hit .247 with 15 homers and 62 RBI last year for Triple-A Buffalo in the Indians' organization…Is a .243 lifetime hitter with 38 homers and 140 RBI for the Astros, Brewers and Athletics in a big league career dating back to 2000…Signed by the Sox last winter as a minor league free agent.

Jed Lowrie: Hit. 298 with 13 homers and 70 RBI last year between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket…Ranked fourth in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Selected by the Sox out of Stanford in the supplemental round of the 2005 draft.

Brandon Moss: Hit .282 with 16 homers and 79 RBI last year between Triple-A Pawtucket and the Sox…Made the Sox' Opening Day roster and hit a game-tying home run—his first big league round-tripper—off Huston Street in the ninth inning of the season opener, a game the Sox went on to win, 6-5, in 10 innings…Will see much of his time at first base for the PawSox after spending most of his career in the outfield…Ranked fifth in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Selected by the Sox out of a Georgia high school in the eighth round of the 2002 draft.

Chad Spann: Hit .207 with eight homers and 43 RBI between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last year…Ranked 45th in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Selected by the Sox out of a Georgia high school in the fifth round of the 2002 draft.

Joe Thurston: Hit .301 with five homers and 61 RBI last year between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Ottawa in the Phillies' organization…Is a .259 lifetime hitter with no homers and two RBI in 58 at-bats for the Dodgers and Phillies in a big league career dating back to 2002…Signed by the Sox last winter as a minor league free agent.

Gil Velazquez: Hit. 246 with two homers and 29 RBI last year between Double-A New Britain and Triple-A Rochester in the Twins' organization last year…Was originally selected by the Mets in the 14th round of the 1999 draft and signed with the Twins following the 2004 season…Signed by the Sox last winter as a minor league free agent.


OUTFIELDERS

Jeff Bailey: Made his big league debut with the Sox last July and went 1-for-9 with a solo homer against the Tigers July 8…Hit .245 with 15 homers and 60 RBI for Triple-A Pawtucket…Is beginning his fifth season with the PawSox…Signed by the Sox as a minor league free agent following the 2003 season.

Chris Carter: Hit .316 with 19 homers and 88 RBI between Triple-A Tuscon in the Diamondbacks organization and Triple-A Pawtucket…Ranked 15th in Diehard's 2008 prospect guide…Acquired by the Sox from the Diamondbacks in the three-way trade that sent Wily Mo Pena to the Nationals Aug, 17, 2007.

Bobby Kielty: Hit .218 with one homer and 12 RBI between the Athletics and the Sox last season and hit a pinch-hit home run in Game Four of the World Series—on the only pitch he saw of the Fall Classic—that provided the Sox with the margin of victory in their Series-clinching victory…Is a .254 lifetime hitter with 53 homers and 253 RBI for the Twins, Blue Jays, Athletics and Sox in a big league career dating back to 2001…Signed by the Sox as a free agent last Aug. 6 and re-signed as a free agent to a minor league deal over the winter.

Jonathan Van Every: Hit .307 with 12 homers and 57 RBI last year between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo in the Indians' organization…Is beginning his third season at the Triple-A level…Signed by the Sox as a minor league free agent last winter and placed on the 40-man roster.
