Pettis close on setting trips

San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) J Serra athlete Dante Pettis is one of the hidden gems in the West Coast 2014 class.

With a last name like Pettis, you wouldn't think there was a chance a player would be overlooked. Dante Pettis' older cousin Austin starred at Orange Lutheran (Calif.) in the class of 2006 and despite being one of the state's best receivers, Boise State was one of only three schools to offer a scholarship.

It appears a similar scenario is playing out for the younger Pettis who is having a big senior season and is easily among the top players in the state, on both sides of the ball. He has the versatility to play corner, safety or receiver in college and has made big plays all year while playing in arguably the states toughest league.

On the recruiting front, Pettis just landed his third FBS offer and could be close on another one.

"SMU offered me last week," Pettis said. "My dad (Gary, 3rd base coach for Texas Rangers) knows some of the coaches at SMU and told them about me. After they watched my film, they decided to offer so that's pretty exciting for me.

"I still have Nevada and San Diego State offers and Arizona State is starting to recruit me now as well. One of the coaches asked for my film and said they would get back to me after evaluating it. An offer from ASU would be big, that would be my first Pac 12 offer and they're a strong program so I'm hoping for the best."

As for his official visits, Pettis said he's still working out those details.

"Me and my dad are going to talk about visits real soon," Pettis said. "I want to take as many as I can but they will probably be after the season. We just have one more league game left so once our season is over, I'll be able to focus more on recruiting and getting out to some colleges."
