Rockies Top-20 Prospects 5-1

The Rockies prospect countdown concludes. Here's prospects 5-1 on the list with additional write ups by me that you won't even find in the Fox MLB Fantasy magazine.

5. Tim Wheeler, OF, 23

  • Height: 6'4
  • Weight: 205
  • Throws: Right
  • Bats: Left

To be honest, my deadline for the Rockies prospect list that is in the Fox Sports Fantasy Baseball and Scout.com Prospect Guide Magazine was months ago and I tweaked that list a bit here. In the magazine, I ranked Trevor Story above Wheeler and now I'm flipping them. Don't call me John Kerry, I was just a fool who couldn't resist putting Story and his upside in the top 5. Now, I can't resist putting Wheeler, who is close to the Majors and has an all-around skill set, in the five spot. Wheeler, despite not carrying a plus or plus plus tool, is a legitimate five tool talent with every tool rating as average to slightly above. He can hit, hit for power, run, field, and throw. He can do it all, except find a spot in the Colorado outfield.

4. Chad Bettis, RHP, 22

  • Height: 6'1
  • Weight: 193
  • Throws: Right
  • Bats: Right

A reliever at Texas Tech, Bettis was dealing in 27 starts last season at High-A pitching entirely off his fastball. There's been talk that Bettis could be on the fast track to the big leagues out of the bullpen because of his power arm, but he maintains his velocity (low to mid-90's with the ability to reach back for more) deep into games. Whether it's starting or relieving, I think the fastball will get him to the show fairly soon. The secondary stuff lags behind, but he could be a number three starter or a late-inning strikeout machine with his power stuff.

ETA: 2013

3. Wilin Rosario, C, 22

  • Height: 5'11
  • Weight: 200
  • Throws: Right
  • Bats: Right

Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2006, Rosario is once again presenting the skills we saw before his knee injury. The injury certainly pushed back his timetable and the Rockies compensated for this by signing veteran backstop Ramon Hernandez. Still, Rosario remains the catcher of the future in Colorado. With a lethal combination of power and arm strength, Rosario's upside is that of an All-Star caliber catcher. He needs to work on making more contact to maximize his power and his receiving behind the plate. If those areas can be improved significantly at Triple-A this year, we could be seeing one of the most dynamic catcher's in the game shortly thereafter.

ETA: 2013

2. Drew Pomeranz, LHP, 23

  • Height: 6'5
  • Weight: 230
  • Throws: Left
  • Bats: Right

A first round pick from Mississippi in 2010, Pomeranz made it all the way from High-A in the Cleveland Indians minor league system to pitching in the big leagues at Coors Field in September. Not bad at all for his professional debut. Pomeranz wasn't himself, though, by the end of the season. Usually 92-93 mph with the ability to touch 96 with his fastball, Pomeranz averaged just 91 mph on his heater in September with the Rockies. After an offseason of rest (not to mention an actual arrest), he'll compete for a big league rotation spot in Spring Training. With the upside of a solid number two starter, he'll be a rotation regular soon enough.

ETA: Late 2012

1. Nolan Arenado, 3B, 21

  • Height: 6'1
  • Weight: 205
  • Throws: Right
  • Bats: Right

After the season that he had in 2011, it should come as no surprise that Nolan Arenado is the Rockies' top prospect. Arenado made enormous improvements to his game over the last year, both offensively and defensively. Arenado answered every question about his long-term viability at third base by working with a nutritionist and losing twenty pounds. He showed an overall commitment to the game and maturity that was well beyond his years. Even more impressive to some scouts was his defense as he showed improved lateral movement, better hands, and a plus throwing arm at the hot corner. Arenado figures to offer the Rockies a lot of value as he projects to hit for a good average with close to 30 home run power.
