Palm Beach Cardinals Notebook: 2013 Week 11

The Palm Beach Cardinals enjoyed the All-Star break, taking a few days off before losing two of three games to the Fort Myers Miracle to open the second half.

June 14-16: All-Star Break

June 17: Fort Myers Miracle 6, Palm Beach Cardinals 5

The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead into the seventh, but watched the Miracle score four runs in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead against starter Kurt Heyer. The right-hander was dominant, tossing six innings of one-run ball before the four-run seventh. He finished hurling 6.1 innings, allowing four runs and striking out seven. Heyer was not a part of decision, as the Cards scored two in the eighth to knot it up at 5-5.

In the ninth inning, reliever Travis Miller (1-8) gave up a single and walk, putting runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice attempt, third baseman Danny Stienstra overthrew his intended target, allowing the Miracle to score and win the game. David Popkins paced the Cards, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

June 18: Fort Myers Miracle 15, Palm Beach Cardinals 6

In the top of the third inning, Stephen Piscotty belted a solo home run to draw the Cardinals within one run at 3-2. However, that would be as close as the Cards would get, as the Miracle pounded out 14 hits and scored 15 runs to coast to an easy victory.

Kyle Hald (2-6) was roughed up, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on six hits in four innings. The bullpen didn't fare any better, as they yielded six runs on eight hits. The Cardinals defense wasn't up to par either, making five errors on the night.

Piscotty kept the Beach Birds in the game, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Fellow All-Star Jonathan Rodriguez belted his fifth homer of the season in the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Miracle beat down the Birds.

June 19: Palm Beach Cardinals 8 at Fort Myers Miracle 5

With the Cardinals in need of a strong pitching performance, Jay Voss delivered. The left-hander tossed five innings, scattering four hits, allowing two runs and striking out one. He picked up the victory, as the Cardinals recorded nine runs on eight hits.

Nick Longmire got things going in the first inning, clubbing his sixth homer of the year, a three-run shot off of Jason Wheeler. That gave Palm Beach a 4-0 lead early. The Cards added on by scoring one in the third and three in the fifth, taking a commanding 8-2 lead. Popkins homered in the third, hitting his second of the year, while Alex Mejia added three hits for the offense.

Power Shortage No More - After hitting six homers during the FSL Home Run Derby, Piscotty sorted out his home run swing. On Saturday night, he homered in the All-Star Game and carried it over by going deep twice on Tuesday night. It was his first homer since May 10. The outfielder leads the club with nine home runs and 32 RBI.

Hey now you're an All-Star - Piscotty and Jonathan Rodriguez were selected for the 2013 Florida State League All-Star Game. Ronnie Shaban was added after midyear promotions, and all three contributed to the 8-1 South victory. Piscotty and Rodriguez homered, while Shaban tossed a scoreless frame.

Mighty Mejia - After a sluggish start, going 1-for-23 in his first seven games, Alex Mejia has turned it around of late. In his last 11 games, the shortstop is hitting .333 (15-for-45) with two doubles and five RBI. Mejia has raised his season average from. 043 to .235.

Player of the Week Missing - Anthony Garcia was awarded with the Florida State League Player of the Week Award for the period of June 3rd through the 9th. In seven games, the outfielder hit .392 (11-for-28) with nine extra-base hits. However, he has not played since winning the award. Garcia was placed on the 7-day disabled list on June 10th.
