RC catches up with Johnny Giavotella

NW Arkansas second baseman Johnny Giavotella is finishing up a breakout 2010 season, in which he hit .322/.395/.460 for the North Division Champion Naturals. Prior to Game One of the Texas League Championship Series, RC caught up with Giavotella for a quick interview.

After hitting a respectable .278 for the NW Arkansas Naturals in the season's first half, Johnny Giavotella went on a tear, hitting .374 (89-for-238) with eight home runs after the All-Star break. The 2008 second-rounder finished second in the Texas League to teammate Clint Robinson with a .322 batting average, and he led the circuit in hits (168) and runs scored (92). On Wednesday afternoon, RC caught up with the young second baseman to get his thoughts on his season.

On the Division Championship Series against the Springfield Cardinals (NW Arkansas won the best-of-five series in five games):

It was actually a good series. Both teams played pretty well, they took a 2-1 lead, and we were fortunate enough to come back and win the last two games.

On his hot second half:

I think just sticking to my approach, and having confidence in what I do. I don't think I did anything different. I was just using the whole field, and just kind of sticking to my approach like I've been doing all season, and it just all kind of came together.

On his defensive improvement:

I definitely feel like I've improved drastically on defense over the past couple of years. I just feel a lot more confident when a ball's hit at me, and I feel like I have a lot more range than I did in the past. So I definitely feel like that's improving as well.

On the comparison between the 2010 Naturals and 2008 Midwest League Champion Burlington Bees:

On this team, there are a lot of players from that '08 team on this team here in Springdale, and I think we have the same characteristics. We can hit the ball really well just like we did in Burlington, and we've got great pitchers. So it's very similar to what we had in Burlington.

On his selection to the Arizona Fall League this year:

I'm definitely looking forward to the Fall League. It's great competition. One of my goals I set for myself before the season was to go there, so I'm definitely excited to go and have a good time and enjoy Arizona.
