Keating shipped to minor league camp

After the Royals' 5-2 spring training loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday afternoon, the club reassigned Patrick Keating to the minor league camp. The 23-year-old right-hander out of the University of Florida earned the big league invite after a breakout full season debut in 2010.

The young reliever split the 2010 season between High-A Wilmington and Double-A NW Arkansas, compiling a 3-1 record with 15 saves and a stellar 2.28 ERA between the two levels. In 71.0 total innings pitched, Keating fanned 101 batters while holding opponents to a miniscule .201 batting average. He also pitched well in the 2010 Arizona Fall League, where he struck out 12 batters in 11.0 innings while posting a 3.27 ERA.

Keating made three appearances for the Royals this spring, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and a walk in three innings pitched. He could return to NW Arkansas to begin the season, or the Royals could bump him up to Triple-A Omaha. Either way, he could see Kansas City at some point in 2011.
