Giavotella gets the call

The Kansas City Royals on Thursday promoted Omaha second baseman Johnny Giavotella to the big league club. He took the place of the recently acquired Yamaico Navarro, who was reassigned to Triple-A Omaha.

Giavotella, 24, was hitting .338/.390/.481 with nine home runs and 34 doubles for theOmaha Storm Chasers. According to Royals general manager Dayton Moore, "Gio" will get steady work at the big league level, playing at least five times a week.

Giavotella was selected by the Royals out of the University of New Orleans in the second round ofthe 2008 draft, and he was named PCL Player of the Month in June. The young second baseman departs Omaha after leading all minor leaguers with 153 hits.
