Rangers Winterball Roundup – 12/5

Shortstop Elvis Andrus and the Navegantes del Magallanes took home a 10-0 victory on Wednesday after plating all 10 runs in one inning. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Dominican Winter League

Engel Beltre, who led the Dominican Winter League in batting average earlier this season, saw his average drop to .267 after he went hitless in three at-bats on Wednesday. Beltre laid down a sacrifice bunt and also grounded into a double play.

Rangers middle infield prospect Hanser Alberto got the start at DH for Cibao and went 1-for-3. Third baseman Leury Garcia was without a hit in his three trips, striking out once.

Venezuelan Winter League

For the second consecutive day, Elvis Andrus batted second and manned shortstop for the Navegantes del Magallanes. Andrus went 0-for-3 but brought home a run after being hit by a pitch.

Andrus joined a number of notable players in the Magallanes lineup on Wednesday, including his brother Erold, DH Pablo Sandoval, second baseman Jose Altuve, centerfielder Endy Chavez, and catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Aguilas del Zulia catcher Juan Apodaca got the start behind the plate on Wednesday and singled once in three at-bats, raising his batting average slightly to .188. The Rangers signed Apodaca to a minor league contract earlier this offseason.

Magallanes beat Zulia, 10-0, on Wednesday after putting up all 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andrus' run-scoring HBP was part of that outburst.

Aragua second baseman Yangervis Solarte was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Guilder Rodriguez saw action as a pinch runner in the ninth inning for Lara, but he didn't have a plate appearance. Used mostly as a defensive and base running specialist, Rodriguez has just 40 official at-bats in 28 games played this winter.

Mexican Pacific League

Algodoneros de Guasave catcher Jose Felix kept his average at a steady .333 with one single in three at-bats. He also drove home his 10th run of the campaign.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jared Hoying moved into the leadoff spot and played left field on Wednesday for Ponce, which picked up a rare victory to improve to 5-15 on the season. Hoying contributed to the ‘W' by going 2-for-5 (both singles) with two RBI.

Catcher Zach Zaneski, who, like Hoying, has joined the Leones for the second half of their season, was 1-for-3 with a double in his winterball debut. Zaneski was also caught stealing once.

Sidearming lefty reliever Alexander Claudio earned his second hold despite allowing a run in two-thirds of an inning. He gave up one hit, a double to Caguas catcher Johnny Monell.

Australian Baseball League

As usual, the Australian Baseball League is taking the midweek off before returning to action on the weekend.
