Gordon not joining Team USA in Cuba

RC today confirmed that 3B prospect Alex Gordon has decided not to join Team USA for the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Western Hemisphere, which will begin in Havana, Cuba later this month. Earlier speculation held that both Gordon and teammate Billy Butler would leave the Wichita Wranglers for the tournament, which begins August 21.

Gordon this season is hitting .314/.416/.557 with 19 HR, and he's been on a tear in recent weeks. He hit .388 for USA Baseball's college national team in the summer of 2004, which swept through the World University Championships in Taiwan with a perfect 8-0 record. Now that he's decided not to join Team USA, it's not hard to imagine that he may be in line for a promotion to Triple-A Omaha sometime soon, and he's an excellent candidate for a September call-up.

We also confirmed that Butler is still planning to join Team USA, according to Wranglers sources.
