Buck Coats, 27, signed with the Royals last November as a minor league free agent and received an invitation to major league spring training. He hit .242 in 33 spring at bats and was reassigned to Omaha to begin the season.
Playing primarily in left field, Coats hit .315/.377/.389 in 54 at bats for the O-Royals this season. Despite leading the club in batting average, he saw less playing time once the Royals claimed outfielder Jai Miller and assigned him to Omaha.
Once the Royals announced plans to turn Alex Gordon into a left fielder, Coats figured to see even less playing time.
Coats began his professional career with the Chicago Cubs after being selected in the 18th round of the 2000 draft. In 11 minor league seasons, he owns a career line of .285/.345/.392 with 46 home runs in 3985 at bats.
Coats made his big league with the Cubs in 2006, and he's spent parts of three seasons in the majors with three different clubs. In 57 career at bats, Coats is a lifetime .193/.242/.333 hitter in the big leagues.
