Three 'Rocks named Carolina League All-Stars

The Carolina League on Thursday announced its mid-season All-Star team, and three Blue Rocks made the cut. Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez, and Alex Caldera will represent Wilmington as the Carolina League All-Stars battle the best of the California League on June 22 in Myrtle Beach.

Eric Hosmer was named as the Carolina League's starting first baseman. The 20-year-old slugger is hitting .361/426/.529 with 22 doubles, five triples, two home runs, and 37 RBIs this season in 227 at bats. Hosmer leads the circuit in batting average and doubles and ranks second in OPS and on-base percentage. This is Hosmer's first All-Star selection.

Salvador Perez was named as one of the squad's backup catchers. The 20-year-old backstop began the season as the youngest player in the Carolina League, performing very well against older competition. In 148 at bats this year, Perez is hitting .284/.323/.432 with three home runs and 22 RBIs. An excellent defensive catcher, Perez leads the league in runners caught stealing.

Alex Caldera this season has bounced back nicely from a disappointing 2009 campaign, logging a 6-3 record with a sparkling 2.84 ERA. In 69.2 innings pitched, the 24-year-old right-hander has fanned 68 batters while issuing just 16 walks and holding opponents to a .252 batting average. Caldera ranks third in the Carolina League in victories, innings pitched, and strikeouts.
