Atlanta Braves Sign Ender Inciarte To Five-Year Extension

The Atlanta Braves have locked up a valuable outfielder for the next 5 years, as Ender Inciarte has earned a decent raise in pay.

The Atlanta Braves gave valued outfielder Ender Inciarte an early Christmas present this morning, as the club announced that Inciarte had signed a five-year extension worth $30.525 million. The extension also includes a club option for the 2022 season.

Inciarte's deal would bypass arbitration and extend his free agency by one season if the club option for 2022 is accepted. Here is a breakdown of the deal, via Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

  • 2017: $2 million
  • 2018: $4 million
  • 2019: $5 million
  • 2020: $7 million
  • 2021: $8 million
  • 2022: Club Option worth $9 million with $1.025 million buyout
  • Signing Bonus: $3.5 million

Inciarte was acquired by the Braves prior to the 2016 season in the Shelby Miller deal that sent Inciarte, Dansby Swanson, and Aaron Blair to Atlanta. In 2016, Inciarte slashed .291/.351/.381, with three home runs and 29 runs batted in. Despite the low power and RBI's, Inciarte is a threat both at the plate and on the basepaths. Inciarte swiped 16 bags in 2016 and scored 85 runs, as well as walking 45 times and striking out a mere 68 times, which is a career high. However, Inciarte is most valuable because of his defensive prowess, as his 27 DRS and 14 outfield assists earned him a Gold Glove award.

Inciarte's 2016 also included one of the best second half performances in Braves history. In 293 at-bats after the All-Star break, Inciarte scored 59 runs, recorded 100 hits, good enough for a .341 batting average, as well as producing an on-base percentage of .396.

Inciarte's extension proves that the Braves are moving forward in their rebuild, and it also proves that the Shelby Miller trade is one of the best trades of the decade for the club (the same can not be said for the Arizona Diamondbacks though).
