Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners Complete Four-Player Trade Involving Mallex Smith, Shae Simmons, Luiz Gohara, Thomas Burrows

The Braves and Mariners completed a four-player trade on Wednesday, but there's more to it.

The Seattle Mariners have made their fair share of deals since the commencement of the offseason, and less than a week after DiPoto swung two deals in a day, he has struck again acquiring Outfielder Mallex Smith and Righty Reliever Shae Simmons from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for two left-handed pitching prospects, Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.

Looking at the Braves' side of this deal, Atlanta acquired two high upside pitching prospects, as Gohara has the ceiling of a mid-rotation starter and Burrows could be a legitimate high leverage reliever who can reach 95 mph on his fastball. These prospects came at a relatively low-cost in two 40-man roster guys who would have been competing for roles in the spring.

This move leaves Lane Adams and Mel Rojas Jr. as the top candidates to take over the Braves 4th outfield role, which could become significant is Nick Markaikas finds himself dealt at some point soon.

For the Mariners, Shae Simmons is a high power reliever who has very high upside with the potential to become a set-up man. He had been sidelined due to injuries, but makes for an interesting buy low addition. Mallex Smith will compete with Ben Gamel, Guillermo Heredia and Mitch Haniger for reserve outfielder roles. It has, however, been reported that Smith could be involved in a subsequent deal, possibly involving the Rays.

Jerry works fast, so stay tuned.
