New York Yankees Trade Johnny Barbato To Pittsburgh Pirates

Pitcher Johnny Barbato was traded from the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later or cash considerations

On April 12, the New York Yankees indicated that righty Johnny Barbato would be designated for assignment. The 23-year-old pitcher had made appearances in 13 games in 2016 for the Yankees, earning a 7.62 ERA through 13 IP. With a 10.4 K/9 ratio, the now 24 year old pitcher has an ability to throw strikes that leveraged his trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this afternoon in a twitter statement by the Yankees PR Department.

Pitching for the Yankees triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders in 2017, Barbato saw one start, lasting four innings and finishing with a loss. The young pitcher gave up five hits, two solo homers, along with two walks and five strikeouts, finishing with a 4.50 ERA in his only start this season.

The Yankees will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations for the dealing of Barbato. The Pirates are looking to beef up their 19th-ranked pitching staff which averages a 4.03 ERA with a K/9 ratio of only 7.0 thus far in the short 2017 regular season.
